I work in an ICU, when I get a new surgical mask with every shift instead of the same for five shifts I might start to agree with that. PPE isn't there yet.

99% of hospitals are stocked with PPE.

The thing is, it won’t remain a slow burn if you:
1. Don’t have massive testing capacity to rapidly identify new cases and test/isolate all their contacts.
2. Have improved the supply chain to ensure ready access to ppe for first responders and health care employees. In Italy hospitals became a major transmission source. Need to protect staff and non infected patients.
3. Need to have a plan for what to do if/when numbers rise again. Disorganized return to house arrest will be harder and more demoralizing than the first time.

May 1st it'll be there likely and definitely for C19 testing. It's close already. Antibody testing hopefully ramps very quickly.

It's there.
And most hospitals are dead empty. 99% of ours are stocked with PPE for weeks of burn rate and 95% are operating at less than 50% patient capacity because of this quarantine and elective procedure pause.

The Upper Midwest, large regional hospital. Rationing is still going on. Tells me that stock isn't there yet and we aren't even really that impacted.

Not ours. Chicago area. We’re ok but a rapid rush would burn inventory quick.
I’d like to see the 15 minute test available in nearly every facility - with some exceptions - before opening up completely.
Rural areas first obviously but high pop density areas need to be slow and cautious.

That's a shame for your hospital. That is not the case most places in the country.
At the couple hundred I work with in 15+ states, I think 2 are in a similar situation to you where they have masks, but ration. Those facilities are hard hit by COVID though and they have shipments basically en route. The supply chain is really catching up nationally.

Are they rationing masks? Or are you saying it appears like they will have to ration soon?
A lot of people in the facilities are saying things like "We'll be out of PPE in 3 days!" without realizing that they'll get relief. The supply chain calls I've been on are really optimistic right now.

So you have masks/PPE but worry a rush of patients will deplete inventory in a critical way at the moment?

Yeah, we’re rationing and it’s ok right now. But you start seeing a lot more folks, contaminating more gear, dragging ever more providers into the covid environment and we’ll use it up
ETA which is obviously always true but I’d like to be sure supplies can be easily replenished when the time comes. Right now areas like NYC/NJ take priority and it’s not clear we could support another couple hot spots simultaneously
