the problem is you have a bunch of people making decisions with peoples lives off of a risk/benefit analysis they dont really understand

you know how you have those studies that show midlevels order more unnecessary diagnostic labs than MDs?

same phenomenon here. they are scared

I made the mistake of lighting up a cig yesterday when the wife was smoking. Bad decision but it worked out because I quickly put it because it tasted awful. How did I ever like those things to begin with? Won't be trying that again. I hope she decides to quit soon because frankly, seeing her smoke is getting on my nerves. I am not her boss so I won't demand she quit but I will strongly encourage it every chance I get.

This has to be hard. I'm glad it tasted nasty. I would hope that after what you've been through your wife would WANT to work with you for you BOTH to stay smoke free.
Make a deal with her to put the money aside that you would normally spend on cigarettes -- had to be a pretty penny with both of you! Then at some point in time, do something fun for the family with it to celebrate!

Yes, get groceries delivered and choose some healthier options. Nothing wrong with pizza now and again but in general eat healthy!

Do you have high blood pressure? And NO the weight doesn't give you a free pass so glad that you see that!

Would you have suggestions on how this could be done in the best manner? Hope your vent patients are doing ok and holding their own.

Blood pressure looks good. My eating habits over the years have been good for the most part and it's a good thing because I made up for it with cigarettes and drugs. Been drug free for years now but you pay a price for the years you are on them. I am fortunate that all three of my little girls (not so little) hate cigarettes. I didn't smoke around them much and if I tried they would force me to put it out. I know I ain't out of the woods yet but it looks like I won't have to worry about them. Watching their parents struggle with addiction has given them strong opinions on the subject.

the first step is realizing you cannot stay locked down forever.

the second step is assessing the damage to the economy and the country already done and figuring out how much longer you can actually manage a shut down

the third step is then assessing what you plan on accomplishing with a shut down (you should have been able to get an idea of this when mulling over the fist step). once you do these things, you can figure out if locking down longer will help more than it hurts or hurt more than it helps.

ie. "well we are consistently seeing numerically less case growth per day now"

"But what if we open everything back up and cases go back up again??"

"that threat is always there due to the asymptomatic nature of this virus; we aren't gaining anything by waiting and our systems arent getting overwhelmed. we slowed the growth down enough to recognize our enemy and get testing up to capacity. time to open up"

for me personally, I think the april 30th recommendation from fedgov is almost too conservative; I definitely wouldn't go beyond that unless things start to change significantly between now and then. I would remove SIP orders but keep social distancing recommendations and send the country back to work. if case number growth was still numerically increasing, I would keep the 50% capacity rule.

monitor for cluster outbreaks and open the country back up fully in June or late May with the option for rolling travel restrictions if a cluster is identified. I would keep international travel limited for a few months.

You gotta do it for them. My mother put me through hell growing up because she couldn’t/wouldn’t quit. It took me a long time to let it go.....the fact that her Marlboros were more important to her than my health. She saw what it did to me, yet wouldn’t try to quit (said she had tried and couldn’t). My pediatrician wrote her a letter once explaining what her smoking was doing to me and imploring her to quit. Didn’t matter. That was hard and I never fully forgave her, at least not while she was alive.

Don’t do that to your kids. Don’t make them resent you. Please encourage your wife to quit, especially if she’s doing it inside the house. That will do nothing but sour them on you.

Happy to hear you’re doing well! Keep it up, man!

We need to have a much, much more robust testing capacity before opening.

Can’t get caught with our pants down again with mushrooming numbers.

The shutdown should hopefully give us time to significantly improve this situation.

Abbott labs 15 minute test should be much more available 1 month from now.

Then open certain areas gradually with possibility of returning to lock down if numbers/rate of growth triggers certain thresholds.

It’ll probably take longer to reopen places like NY, Detroit, Chicago etc

I honestly don’t see how y’all believe we can wait that long.

I don't think it has anything to do with belief at this point.

We are not opening back up before May 1st.

We have always considered the kids feelings. Our bedroom was the only place in the house we would smoke. Otherwise it was outside and never in the car. Adults have no business smoking in their car with children in the backseat. My kids hate smoking and I am ecstatic about it. My 12 year old started crying happy tears when she found out I quit. Not because she she was bothered by it but because it bought her more time with her dad. She has always been my best friend in the world outside of my wife.

The majority of the country will have extremely low numbers come 5/1. I am not saying I have an opinion one way or the other but if the government expects people to stay inside after 5/1 when all of the data is showing very little infections/deaths they better have a strong message/plan as to why this makes sense. It was 75 in Chicago yesterday and half of the city was out walking around, people are not going to stay inside when the weather is nice and numbers are low.

Unfortunately, I agree. And it will be a slow, rolling process opening up a bit at a time.

WASHINGTON (AP) — In a first, small step toward reopening the country, the Trump administration could relax coronavirus guidelines as early as Wednesday to make it easier for Americans who have been exposed but have no symptoms to return to work, particularly those in essential jobs.

quote:

Under the expected new guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people who have been exposed to someone who was infected would be allowed back to work if they are asymptomatic, take their temperature twice a day and wear a face mask, said a person familiar with the proposal under consideration. The person described the proposal on the condition of anonymity because the draft had not been finalized.

What’s wrong with those recommendations?

Sounds extremely reasonable.

Unless you want them to go further, which I fully agree with.

It's a big step man.

And you're saving what, $250/month? Not sure what kind of habit you have but it should be a significant amount of money back into your pocket.

Not even quantifying the long term benefits to your damn health.

Its a big deal, congrats for sure.
