Corona Virus is bankrupting my parent’s and sister’s small travel business

They have had trips booked months in advance to Thailand, Japan, Italy, France along with a few other countries. All the trips are between this Friday and and June. They are having to take massive losses in money that they can’t get back on hotels and flights. Almost 70 clients that will lose money also along with sister and my parents.
Most clients have already pulled out of the trips. This has to be one of the worst business to be in right now.
Hopefully they can get at least a small refund or credit on some non-cancelable rooms and flights.
But I would rather them go bankrupt than put themselves and others at risk. Lots of older aged clients.
This sucks.

I’m not familiar with the travel business model, but do travel agents really put up their own money to cover their client’s cancellations? That seems too risky unless they keep insurance or cash reserves to keep them from going bankrupt.

Wonder if @rogertheshrubber will be here to tell OP that his parents put themselves in this situation and they have no one to blame but themselves.

Very sorry man. I’m getting crushed right now too . The vagaries of commerce and life in general are never ending. I also have a Trip to Greece scheduled with my son in June. I can’t imagine having to deal with all those people. Best of luck to them.

That sucks, dude. I remember you saying you found a real niche to make good coin for a while and it made all the difference. I was a little jealous, even though I have done well in my legal specialty. But, for real, if pension funds take a negative hit this year (or even stay flat), it's armageddon in my industry.

I offer a niche service. It’s relatively lucrative. I’ve been grinding it for more than a decade. If I can’t see my client, I can’t earn. I’ve been sick like a dog with semi-Corona- like symptoms and can’t see anybody. And if they can’t see me, same thing. No health- no commerce. So I’ll have to adjust accordingly. No guarantees in life. Business , despite what we are taught, is NOT life and death.
