I’m sure these same police feel civil asset forfeiture isn’t theft though.

A little more than a year ago, the state of Indiana charged a suspected drug dealer with theft for removing a government-owned GPS tracking device from his SUV. This month, the state's Supreme Court began considering the case, and some justices seemed skeptical of the government's argument.
"I'm really struggling with how is that theft," said Justice Steven David during recent oral arguments.

Is it legal to put the tracker there in the first place without his consent?

They can with a warrant. I don’t like the idea of the police using tracking devices on us period though, even with a warrant.

Back in 2012, the US Supreme Court ruled that it's illegal for the police to attach a GPS tracking device to someone's car without a warrant.
frick that.
It should be illegal period. That is an unreasonable violation of privacy and is not something people agree to when they drive on public roads and when they get their drivers license.
The only way I could see GPS trackers on cars being ok is for convicted felons and probation officers need to track them.
The idea that government can put tracking devices on my car is completely fricked up when I am a free man.

So the cops put a bug in my house and I find it and throw it in the trash that’s considered theft?

Agreed
Somebody in the Hong Kong thread got really defensive saying America is nothing like HK and the CCP. We have the most incarcerated population on the planet, he NSA spies on us, our police rob us through revenue generating speed traps, civil asset forfeiture, etc. They put tracking devices on us. To bust us because there are certain things we aren’t allowed to put into our own bodies.
Land of the frickin free...

I really am pro police but when it comes to fricking bonehead moves like this, i think police officers should be called out.
Those fricking morons working off emotion and lack of common sense keep fueling the fire and the n wanna wonder why people hate the police

I wonder if the police had a warrant to do that for so long.

What made them install a GPS on the guy's car? He didn’t have an iPhone?

But we need to pray to god we aren’t Hong Kong

My point in that thread is HKers were at least fighting for their eroding freedoms. Americans just sit back when things like the story in the OP happen and say "that sucks".

I do wonder what the officers think about this. It would be a moral conundrum for anyone I’m sure, but maybe they realize it’s worth losing public opinion:trust over in order to reap the benefits.

They do it all the time. But they persuade a judge that they have probable cause and get a court order that allows it. They don’t just randomly put them on cars.

Well... when you allow the police to militarize, what options do we really have?

Moral conundrum? Cops trample all over our rights daily and you call it a moral conundrum?
You need to re-evaluate your position.

Which shouldn’t be allowed even if they have probable cause. We aren’t a police state (arguable) and things like that are how you very quickly get to being a police state.

Meanwhile, the guy has probably had to pay thousands of dollars in lawyer fees while the police/State use taxpayer funded lawyers.
Push back and face SLAPP lawsuits.

Unless the man consented or there was a warrant, those police can go frick themselves here.

Get out there and protest. The citizens of HK did, there's no reason we can’t. Our police should be there to serve and protect, not find every way it can to extract money from us and lock us up to fuel the prison industry.
