Honestly easiest answer is backup contacts with app and delete them all
Or all personal
I wouldn't have a problem telling them no, but offer to make a work related list

What kinda bush league outfit doesn't have a database of custoners, leads as part of a sales mgmt system
Did they run thru all the Rolodexes?

I think the other questions is what shady pos software are they using to do this, and does it expose your personal info to risk

This.
And no, you do not have to give them your phone to download the information if they do not pay for the phone, or provide it to you.
I would hand write a list, and make it as illegible as possible (that's just the petty part of me talking, you probably shouldn't do that).
BTW, this does NOT sound like a legitimate organization.

Wouldn't the customers already be on file in their data base? I mean the company name, address, numbers contact person. if not, someone doesn't know how to run a company.

Sounds shady as frick. Employer doesn't have a right to access your private personal info. I'd refuse to give them any access to my phone and tell them you'll provide relevant business related contact info for your personal contacts who you end up doing business with but thats it. If they terminate you for not giving them access to your personal cell phone that they don't pay for, first thing I'd do is call at attorney about possible wrongful termination suit.

The short And long answer is no they are not allowed. Their reason for wanting it is irrelevant. Tell them you will provide them with the customers contact info . Either write it down for them or forward each contact. The cops cannot even do that without a warrant.
If they made you use your personal G mail account and laptop for customers, would you hand over your computer? This is the same thing.

I haven't. They didn't have the cable for my phone so I would need to bring the cable from my house.
That's like making you bring in the dildo from home to frick your own arse with it at work.

I'm guessing you or one of your colleagues is getting ready to get the boot.
They want the info off of THAT phone, and then said, hey, what the heck, let's get it from everyone.
Do you deserve to be fired?
You can be all mad about it, and you can lightly argue it if you're secure in your job, but you and I know you're not going quit your job today over this.
Give em your contacts, update your resume' and get to work.

It's very common for salesmen to have contact numbers of customers that aren't in the "database." Big customers have lots of contacts, with only a handful landing in the seller's database. (front line people, who are decision makers in saleman's phone, while purchasing and such people in the computer.)
It's all about relationships in a lot of sales jobs.

Someone is banging the boss' wife and this is his strategy to find out who has her number.

Are you using a company email exchange, email address, or are you connected to a company email server? Not sure if that matters as it pertains to the law but if you're on a company server they ready have all your emails and contacts.

You probably signed a non compete. Those mean shite in la though. I wouldn't give em nothing.

Yes but I save all of my contacts to my Gmail account since it's on my phone. They did not provide me with a company phone or an allowance when I started but fully expected me to use my cell phone for business. May have to revisit that decision

I'd tell them hell no. If that's not an option, change all the numbers in your contacts, I.e. Move all the sixth numbers up by one.
