Are you using a company email exchange, email address, or are you connected to a company email server? Not sure if that matters as it pertains to the law but if you're on a company server they ready have all your emails and contacts.
That doesn't sound right...but correct me if I'm wrong. How would me using email exchange on my phone to connect to company email allow them access to my Gmail account emails or contacts? Other than an actual hacking of the phone.

It won't. What he's saying if he is using an email like soandso @ companyname dot com they will have access to all of that already. If he is using his personal Gmail they wont have access to that.

They did not provide me with a company phone or an allowance when I started but fully expected me to use my cell phone for business.
Sounds like you work for a terrible company. Good luck with that! I have been in sales for over 10 years with companies in varying industries and they have always given me a company cell phone and one did an allowance.

Sorry, way I read it was that if you were connected to company's server on your phone that they had access to everything on your phone.

I worked for a company years ago, before smart phones, blackberries had just come out and they made us keep the Gps feature on so they could track us.
