Company gave non-smokers six extra days off to make up for co-workers' smoke breaks

Good idea, IMO. Seems like cigarette smokers always take plenty of extra breaks that non smokers never do.

A Japanese company has started giving its non-smoking employees extra paid leave to compensate them for their co-workers’ cigarette breaks, according to The Telegraph.
The Telegraph on Monday reported that Tokyo’s Piala Inc. now gives its non-smoking staff six extra days of paid holidays annually after they complained about the firm’s smoking policy.
Piala then introduced the non-smokers’ perk last month, and the marketing firm’s employees have quickly embraced the change.
“One of our non-smoking staff put a message in the company suggestion box earlier in the year saying that smoking breaks were causing problems,” Piala spokesman Hirotaka Matushima said.

I hope to encourage employees to quit smoking through incentives rather than penalties or coercion,” Piala CEO Takao Asuka told Kyodo News.

Matsushima said that the new policy inspired four people to give up smoking, adding that he is a non-smoker who has used the additional paid holidays for a family trip.

I would love it if the company I worked for did this.

That really is a smart solution and great incentive to stop smoking

Why can’t people just wait until their lunch break to grab a smoke. Personally I would not want anyone I worked with to know I was a smoker.

I wouldn't hire a smoker, they're the least productive people I've ever worked with.

Six additional days?
How many damn vacation days do they get? I thought the Japanese were insanely hard workers.

The only employee I have that smokes, is the the most reliable, hard worker that I have. Couldn't care less if she has a few smoke breaks each day.

It's all based upon Merit. Pretty Basic really.

I drive by a Toyota plant at least once a week. Toyota does not allow smoking on the property. There are always a bunch cars parked on the road outside the gate with workers hanging out smoking.

You’re confusing them with Vietnamese and Chinese factory workers

I'm moving to Japan.

damn right, as an ex smoker i can tell you, even without trying to lollygag it takes a good 20 minutes from the time you stop work for a cigarette break to actually being back working again and most smokers "need" at least one smoke break an hour if they can get away with it.
when i quit smoking it was literally like working nearly 3 hours more a day when i no longer had those smoke breaks.
at least now its almost universal no smoking anywhere so there is no place they can go to smoke so they cant take smoke breaks. now you dont have to do others work while they are out smoking

Maybe if we just let the smokers smoke at their desks like the civilized country we used to be this wouldn’t be a problem.

I just smoked a cigarette. Loved every minute of it

Amen! Back when I was younger and worked in a restaurant, employees would go in the back and smoke a cigarette and get on their phones without violation. But if I went back there and got on my phone without a cigarette, I would get in trouble for being on my phone. It was the dumbest shite and used to infuriate me.
I love this idea.

So you were missing a third of the day to go smoke? Damn.
