- Maintenance: "Operations is a bunch of idiots who don't know what the hell they're doing. All they do it tear up our equipment."

- Operations: "Maintenance don't know how to fix anything, they worked this pump last week and it's broke again."

There's always that one guy (usually in Maintenance) who's favorite quote is "That's bull shite, I've been doing this for 43 years and we ain't never done it like that." He's only 55 years old.

Engineers need to work on the stuff they design so they realize when it has to be worked on, it needs to be accessible.

Best I have heard.

Maintentance hand: "You can train any idiot off the street to be an operator in 3 weeks"

Old Ops guy reply: "I've been here 40 years and we have yet to train a maintenance hand"

"I've been working in this plant longer than you've been alive." Response to a new operator asking a legit question to a dumbass operator that had been promoted to shift foreman and was incapable of answering the question. I hate to say it, but engineered in safety is the only thing that keeps some of the dumbasses in operations from blowing the plant up.

That being said, I've worked with some high school educated operators that had tons of common sense and were very smart guys. The smart engineers learned to listen to them.

There’s a high probability that we’ve all worked in a plant at some in our lives.

I'm 52 and have been working in plants since the fall of 1986. I spent my first 8 years at the old Arcadian Chem in Geismar with Turner Ind. Then went on to a 4 year stint at the old Vulcan Chem with Turner as well. At that time I applied for and landed a job for the plant I still work for today. I make 21 years in August. I plan on working 10 more years then retire at 62.

It was a hard road for the first 10-12 years I must say. The work was hard and the long hours took a toll on my life but I made a good living. Now I have a great job that I enjoy and travel to our sites all over North America.

All of these comments and sayings amuse me. Some are true and some are just ridiculous but still a good read. I have to admit its part of the fabric of being a lifelong plant "hand".

quote:

Common plant baw complaint

* This company never wants to fix shite right.
* If it weren't for operators we'd be out of a job.
* If the damn engineers had to work on these machines they would build them differently. (True)
* I ain't working this weekend. That bullshite! They don't need this machine now its been broken for a month.
* I ain't working OT today. I got shite to do!
* If they don't let me take my vacation I'm telling them to cut my money today damnit!
* Mechanic - It's an I&E problem
* I&E Tech - It's a mechanical problem.

This must be in every field.

This reminds me of a conversation I had with tugboat captain. He drives barges up and down the intracoastal.

He was talking about something and he was like "yeah, a few weeks ago they needed me to go teach the engineers how to do their job. They might be book smart, but they don't have common sense so they needed me to go explain it to them" (paraphrasing).

Based on a few other things he was saying, I pretty much got the idea that they were redesigning something and they needed someone who would be using it on a regular basis uses whatever they were redesigning.

In other words, they wanted to make sure it wasn't designed on theory so they wanted to hear from those who use it and exactly how they use it.

I fail to see how this makes the engineers look dumb.

It doesn’t. It highlights the fact that some people have a shitty attitude regardless.

Engineer consults with the operator when designing a project, the engineer is therefore too stupid to know what’s going on in the unit and it’s a good thing that under appreciated operator was there to set him straight.

Engineer doesn’t consult with operators and something doesn’t go 100% perfect, the engineer is a know it all and can’t be trusted to do anything right unless the wizened operator is there to hold his hand.

Those guys are thankfully few and far between in my experience, but dealing with them is exhausting.
