Based on a few other things he was saying, I pretty much got the idea that they were redesigning something and they needed someone who would be using it on a regular basis uses whatever they were redesigning.

In other words, they wanted to make sure it wasn't designed on theory so they wanted to hear from those who use it and exactly how they use it.

The John Deere manufacturing plant in Augusta, Ga brought me over to tour their plant because our farm is one of their largest customers and I sat down with their engineers to tell them things I’d like to see done.

Doesn’t mean engineers are “being told how to do their job” just means they want input from those who use their product a lot.

There are some seriously dumbass people posting in this thread. I've worked in a few different plants and have pretty much seen it all, but you guys with the 'truth' about various occupations are laughable.

I was pretty pissed when they laid off all the portacan girls at Shintech. Used to be able to stretch $20 into a blowie

I’m thinking of going to be a production supervisor at a plant on the river. What can I expect? From what it sounds like everyone is a retard there. Operators and supervisors alike.

My only complaint is that some things are so overly safety engineered that they are more dangerous than had they just left them alone.

We had to fire an operator that was too lazy to pencil whip. He was turning in xeroxed copies of his round sheet.

Never worked in a plant, but I have had dumbfrick bosses and I have worked with dumb shite engineers.

Every job like this I have had, everyone thinks everyone else is the “dumbfrick”

I’m an operator at a major. Engineers get rotated from unit to unit and lean on the knowledgeable operators to get them up to speed.

Plant Engineers didn’t design these processes, their job is to maximize production and troubleshoot the chemistry side of the process when there is an upset.

The processes were designed by R&D Chemist and Scientist that often times don’t even work for the companies that buy the technology.

Engineers typically think everything works in the field the same way it should work on paper and often overlook variables that operators overcome on a daily bases.

30% of operators are dumbasses, don’t deserve their pay and do the bare minimum to keep the checks coming. Another 30% are baws that get shite done, like to be left alone, great at the machinery side and like turning valves. The rest are very intelligent and work with engineering, management etc. to maximize production and make the company money. These guys are usually the ones that work their way up to ops supervisors, process specialist etc.

I’d be willing to bet the average operator at a major has a higher IQ than your average LSU or ULL grad

But like any job, the few end up being the voice for the many.

Well-written, intelligent reply that's also true.

50% downvotes.

Man. I get this all the time. I am usually called in because something isn't working correctly. My first question is always "are you operating/following the design?" Usually it is no.

Even the smart operators that I've dealt with were generally some of the most ignorant people I've ever met. They know how to be an operator and maybe work on cars but that is it. Operators are just pipe fitters with nicer clothing.

If you’re not currently a supervisor in the chemical/refining industry you’re in for a rude awakening

20 years in the same plant, 13 as an operator.

Best I've heard was a shift supervisor tell a process engineer:

"I'm here to cook the beans. You here to count 'em"

And, believe it or not removing the handle on a ball/plug valve and tagging the stem is an accepted lock-out method by OSHA.

I’m not even going to entertain this stupidity.

You clearly don’t know anything about operations

Straight out of school I got on at DOW. Went to first day and realized the nightmare of the drive from staring/highland to the plant gates. F that. Went to the oilfield.

At the safety meetings you hear, “no one is rushing you. Do the job safely. You have the authority to stop any job if you don’t feel safe. Etc” now I’m not the one out there pulling wrenches, but I know for a fact that when the plant needs that reactor back up and running, none of that quoted above is true.
