Legislators rejected the deal after trucking firms cried foul over a plan to force them to pay as much as $12.50 when crossing the bridge.

people are retarded about tolls. they act like its 1947 and you have to drive up and hand a dollar or that you cant get a pass or that it wouldnt be essentially free to local residents.
in other words people are retarded
you have people in this thread, otherwise smart people, who are fear mongering that the bridge is about to fall down. completely clueless
the politicians are just as dumb and this bridge will never be built unless the feds bank roll the whole thing.
Everyone also needs to consider who serves on this committee.
If yall think anyone out of state is concerned with building anything in Louisiana, a state they can see is poorly run, you are delusional.

It's on its last leg and even without any structural concerns it's still a very dangerous bridge.
Modern bridges aren't built using the turtle back design anymore because they are dangerous. That and the lack of a shoulder have caused a lot of accidents and deaths.

Man. I just don't understand your state's mindset at all. Isn't that think crumbling?
The last time major work was done on the I-10 bridge I bid some work on the underneath, providing work platforms where the structural crossmembers connected to one another. It was scary seeing the huge 6' structural beams connection's, most were rusted out and not even connected in some instances.

correct but its not a structural concern and it isnt about to fall down. thats straight fear mongering
it 100% needs to be replaced and it 100% should be a toll. too many people are too dumb to understand the economics on why this is, but it is the case.
and i hate to bring politics over here...but Stout...what happened to your daddy promising a replacement?

There have been multiple projects on it the last 15 years after the minn bridge collapse
Before they did the major 210 reno, they did a lot of inspection/maintenance on 10 due to the anticipated increased traffic load during the 210 work

I agree it isn't right now but you can only put band-aids on it for so long
I think the only real concern I would have is if I were ever stuck on it at a standstill due to an accident. Modern vehicles are much heavier now. I know people have been on it during a standstill and everything was cool but I admit my anxiety would be up there despite knowing they inspect it often.

They also did a lot of inspecting after the riverboat nailed it during Hurricane Laura

State Rep. Les Farnum (Sulphur) said that the legislature has assembled 1.2 billion dedicated to what we think was for the bridge but DOTD wants to say it is for the I-10 corridor. I speculate that would include property acquisition, pipeline relocation, and improvements for the City of Westlake.)
State Rep. Phillip Tarver (Lake Charles) stated "Let's build the bridge that we can afford."
Could it be that the Joint Committee voted to support the SW Louisiana delegation out of respect to them?

the bridge is actually in pretty good shape. the big thing they did was replacing and inspecting the bolts after the Minn bridge collapse
as you mentioned they did a lot of inspections and continue to monitor the frick out of it
it gets put on the most dangerous list because of age, the slope, how narrow it is etc etc
people take that as its about to fall down as evidenced in this thread
its a POS bridge which should have never been kept as a interstate bridge but certainly not after 1975. the OG purpose of the insterstate was to be able to move military equipment throughout the country with ease like germany did with the autobahn. That bridge can not do that. so on top of everything else, it doesnt even meet the original purpose.

Pretty sure this $1.2 billion number is made up and the state doesn't have nearly that much cash dedicated to this project. Would love if I was wrong, but feels like a politician talking out of his you know what.....

Totally agree. Those pushing the current and past designs want something that looks like a modern art master piece. A simple overpass like the I-210 bridge with a shoulder is all that is needed and could probably be built without tolls and completed far sooner.

People who get mad at state agencies need to wake up and realize that the issue is the legislators they elect.

These are the same people that will claim that Texas has better roads (toll heavy) and then blame Louisiana for being the problem.

Best bridge in the state. You can drive as slow as you want to check out the scenery because there’s never a damn soul on it.
Paid for with an additional tax, see how that works.

The current bridge was built by the state and opened in 1952 well before there was an interstate system.
From what I recall when the interstate was initially built the Feds put up 90% and the stste 10%.
By my calculations the Feds owe us 90% of a new bridge. The state should put up 10% and call it even.
ETA: The new Speaker needs to read this abd help bring home the bacon.

im fine with that but it cant be a simple overpass. it needs to address the exit ramps going into westlake which is a cluster frick with the trains etc.
and it can not be built without tolls period. there is absolutely no way this happens without the Public private partnership. you are absolutely clueless if you think otherwise and this means a toll
sorry the state doenst have close to the money needed for their share even if the feds put up theirs. and the state isnt in good standing on these types of projects with the feds.
toll is only way this gets passed
i find it funny people brag about the interstate systems elsewhere and then say no tolls!!!! how the hell do you think all those nice interstate systems got built?
