LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - The I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge replacement project was rejected by the Joint Transportation Committee today.

House members voted eight to six against the proposal, which included $800 million in public funding and a toll.

Because both houses would need to approve the item, the committee moved on without a Senate vote.

The vote came after DOTD Secretary Eric Kalivoda, along with a member of Calcasieu Bridge Partners, presented the proposal to the committee. They also heard testimony from many Southwest Louisiana officials, including State Rep. Wilford Carter.

Kalivoda said the consequences of canceling the project include potentially losing a $150-million federal grant. He also offered some other options for the bridge, Including rehabilitation projects that may extend the life of the current structure.

Right now, the next step is not clear.

It will take that bridge falling into the river for them to replace it

What was the reason for the objection? Why did 8 members vote against it?

Article is light on details.

If it does, people should be able to sue every single person on that committee who voted no

It's because KPLC never tells the full story. They only tell what they are allowed to tell by the "powers that be" around the dump that is Lake Charles.

Man. I just don't understand your state's mindset at all. Isn't that think crumbling?

I'd say a toll on i10 is pretty stupid. Fund it another way.

Why not that’s the only way this thing will pass. Give the 5 parish area a break and make non local traffic pay a small fee for using it

The Audubon Bridge in St Francisville (which never has traffic) gets funded and built but they cant find a way to put a bridge on I10 in Lake Charles. One of the most heavily trafficked routes in America.

Some serious frickery

I travel to Beaumont/GT/Houston from BR for work every other week. I always have meetings in LC either on the way there or on the way back. There are several places underneath that bridge where huge chunks of concrete have fallen off and rebar is exposed and corroding rapidly. I’ll be damned if I die due to that bridge collapsing. 210 is the only way to go. That or 190 and back roads. Whoever said it will be replaced when it collapses is right. Unreal.

Because they'll get it done in 30 years no doubt.

Blows my mind that they'd sabotage a desperately needed project.

Lake Charles and Baton Rouge both desperately need some big bridge projects because the state has neglected those areas for so long.

The local delegation was against any tolls. So the funds in place will go back to BR and the Feds.
