The Audubon Bridge in St Francisville (which never has traffic) gets funded and built but they cant find a way to put a bridge on I10 in Lake Charles. One of the most heavily trafficked routes in America.

People paid to cross the ferry for years which helped fund that bridge. I agree there isn't much traffic but it is there and could be used as part of the BR loop. (whom I kidding)

The Lake Charles bridge is a horrible situation. That bridge should be fast tracked for replacement. I don't agree with having a toll on it.

Well then it’ll never get done because the Lake Charles area gets none of the state money for anything whether it’s hurricane or infrastructure

It will take 30 years just like all the interstate work they have been doing in Beaumont since I was in Jr High in the 90s

What was the reason for the objection? Why did 8 members vote against it?

Article is light on details.

Sadly that’s the state of modern journalism. Lead with the provocative statements and leave off any meaningful details.

It must be where women learn to communicate.

I think they were going to route I-10 where I-210 is now.

But you are right that tolls to fund a route that's already existed for 70 years is kind of stupid.

There are IH tolls and IH toll bridges all over this country. Louisiana can't have one?

Why a pay a toll to beat the stuffings out of your vehicle before Laffy.
If going westbound, why pay to leave the state. The way things are going with state self-interests and disorganization, the state should pay us for leaving.

It's long been a priority of the state to replace ferry boats with bridges since even before the Luling disaster. However - ferry tolls didn't contribute much, if anything to those new bridge crossings. If that were the case, the bridge in Plaquemine would have long been built by now.

In the 1980s, there were very powerful people in the legislature and in the first Edwards administration from New Roads/False River. They got the Audubon Bridge moved up in priority among dozens of other state projects at the expense of a bypass around Baton Rouge. When the New Orleans political interests started torpedoing major infrastructure projects outside of the city, only the Audubon Bridge and a few others remained. There was enough political pull to make sure the priority was still there when the TIMED program was codified into law by voters. TIMED was the largest infrastructure package every funded by the state of Louisiana - and the Audubon bridge was the largest bridge project in that whole program. Design work began almost immediately; but construction of the bridge and its approaches were not completed until 20 years later.

That area had been talking about and pushing a bridge connecting New Roads and St. Francisville since the 1960s. Normal, garden variety politics got that bridge built. There was plenty of cash going around (unlike today) and they shielded funding for that bridge project from being reallocated to some bullshite projects around New Orleans. Baton Rouge and Lake Charles were not so lucky.

Why not that’s the only way this thing will pass. Give the 5 parish area a break and make non local traffic pay a small fee for using it

if you havent dealt with tolls then dont comment. They build up so much more than you can imagine when you are forced to use them.

A lot of people already rely on that section of highway. Adding a toll for maintenance seems like total bullshite to me. That road has existed without tolls. An entire city built up around it.

That being said - I fully support tolls for the new bridge south of Baton Rouge. That route doesn't exist today, and it will replace a ferry that is also tolled.

Fixed. We all know it was voted down because someone isn't getting their cut.

Didn't the nuclear plant and evacuation concerns play into that too?

Best bridge in the state. You can drive as slow as you want to check out the scenery because there’s never a damn soul on it.

If you don’t have to travel that death trap everyday don’t comment. This thing needs to be built sooner rather than later if it takes a toll then so be it
