How were they even still in business with today's music model?

One of the biggest grifts ever but man was it successful.

quote:

Remember when you could get seven records or 8-track tapes for a penny or 12 cd’s for that same bargain-basement price?

The original subscription music service, which came decades before we had streaming subscriptions, is going the way of the 8-track.

Columbia House is shutting down after seven decades.

Columbia House—which, through the program once widely advertised as the Columbia Record Club, was the brief boon, and eventual bane, of the wallets of many a low-budget music seeker—is officially shuttering its mail-order business. (Which switched over to exclusively selling and shipping movies several years back, for those of you not up-to-date on the mail-order game.) Per NPR, the company’s web site now carries a notification that “After 9/15/26, The Columbia House will no longer be accepting new orders.”

Those orders are going to be pretty skimpy, too: The company’s web site currently offers only 12 “new releases,” most of which are already several years old

The actual business provenance of Columbia House is a long and convoluted one, meanwhile, starting with what would eventually become Sony Music Entertainment back in 1955, before winding through a long stream of bankruptcies and sales.

In its day, though, Columbia House was both famous and infamous for its ubiquity and its introductory offers that “sold” a dozen CDs for a penny—while also putting those new members on the hook to buy many more at regular prices, unless they could work out the arcane rituals necessary to cut themselves free. Referred to as “negative-option billing,” this practice bilked god knows how many teenagers (or, more specifically, their parents) out of massive amounts of money over the years while also, admittedly, helping to build out America’s CD collections in pretty spectacular fashion.

Pay the first payment with money order using fake name. Receive all cd's/tapes, then don't pay the remaining payments.

I just watched the "Goldbergs" episode about Columbia House a few days ago. I had zero idea that they were still in business.

I was always a BMG guy, myself

I would say the vast majority of my CD collection was built through them. they were always having great deals in the newsletter, so why not?

If you sent back the stupid cards stating you didn't want their "selection of the month", sometimes they sent that hot garbage anyway. After the 2nd piece of crap CD showed up, I stroked a check to get something decent and be done with those pirates.

What is weird though is that IMO it wasn't that bad of a deal. Sure, you paid a lot for the CDs after the initial deal, but it wasn't like they were massively overpriced or anything.

So I'd get the 7-9 CDs for pennies, and then gradually buy other ones that were maybe harder to find or something like that. So it wasn't a bad deal at all IMO (even though yes, I understand the negative views of that kind of business).

I got my first batch of CDs ever from Columbia House after getting my first CD player back in the late early 90s. Good times. I still have those CDs somewhere in storage too.

Fair.

But they did send them out to an 11 year old, so there's that. What did they expect?

Oh, it was unquestionably predatory. I'm not arguing that.

Just that even completing the "deal" they offered wasn't really that bad and you didn't really get screwed on it. And honestly, with how easy it was to forge or simply not pay, I'm surprised it was lucrative for CH anyway.

I did this shite when I was about 12 and paid nothing on it. It's their fault for letting minors order shite they had no way of paying for.

It used to be possible to chain deals and certain selections from their DVD club to either make money or at least have a minimal outlay to get what you want.

IIRC, it involved getting one or more of a $50 double disc Armageddon special edition for resale to cover the costs of everything else you got between large numbers of selections to start with and a minimum number of fulfillment titles.

I got my first albums from them in 1976 or 77. We talked mom into letting us order from them when we saw their ad in the TV Guide. I got to pick two….

I remember my mom getting on me about the box of cassettes and saying you don't even have a job , I'm not paying for this.

My Dad got home and looks at the situation and says, " that's okay, neither is he, right Jack Smith?
