Oh, it was unquestionably predatory. I'm not arguing that.
Just that even completing the "deal" they offered wasn't really that bad and you didn't really get screwed on it. And honestly, with how easy it was to forge or simply not pay, I'm surprised it was lucrative for CH anyway.
Predatory in the same sense that credit cards are predatory.
People who read the fine print know how to play the game to their advantage. They make their money off all the lazy / stupid people.

I knew all I had to do was wait them out.
I remember joking that cops should just sub out their nationwide manhunts to Columbia House. Those guys were relentless. Followed me through five address changes through high school and college.

Nah. I get what you're implying, but that's not really apples to apples.
If you didn't buy another CD from CH in time, they automatically sent you one and charged your card for it. CC companies don't do that shite.

I did this shite when I was about 12 and paid nothing on it. It's their fault for letting minors order shite they had no way of paying for.

I gamed it, got all the free up front albums, only got burned one or twice forgetting to send back the post card with nothing this month checked, then after a year or so when I had fulfilled the purchase commitment I would cancel it, wait 3 months and then rejoin and get another bunch of free albums again.
Did that like 3 times, had a big record collection.
Plus cassette mix tapes from the Casey Kasum Top 40 show.

Was nothing like carefully perusing the Columbia House catalogs to make your 12 cd selections and then seeing that big, beautiful box finally show up.
