College students who use laptops in classroom learn less and get worse grades, study finds

College students who use computers or tablets during lectures “learn less and earn worse grades,” according to a randomized study conducted by Sue Dynarski for the Brookings Institution.
Even though students are able to transcribe more information at a faster pace and access their readings with ease on electronic devices, a growing body of evidence suggests that students would be better off taking notes the old-fashioned way.
The study found that when students use laptops, they are prone to distract themselves by checking their social media notifications or browsing the web. Moreover, the effect of one student’s distraction can have a ripple effect on his or her peers.
In the randomized study, the multitasking students scored about 11 percent less than those students taking notes. And for those sitting near the screen of multitaskers who were not multitasking themselves scored 17 percent lower than those who had a view without distraction.
Even for those on task and taking notes, there are drawbacks of typing compared to writing notes.
Because students can type faster than they can write, they are able to record almost every word the lecturer speaks — eliminating the need to summarize and condense the information.
Learning researchers posit that it is actually through the process of summation, though, that students internalize information. Typing impedes the brain’s ability to process information because the information flows too quickly from students’ ears to their fingers — students’ notes turn into transcripts rather than condensed versions of what is being said.

It’s because they’re spanking off. Not studying.

Who the hell would do that?

Least surprising thing ever. 90% of people who bring laptops to class just screw around on the internet instead of paying attention
Writing stuff down will always be superior when actually taking notes

I type very slowly so my brain works overdrive condensing the information which makes laptops the GOAT learning experience.
Lesson: type SLOWER

I browsed the internet for the most part. Made graduating harder but I figured it out

Anyone taking down every word of a lecture clearly has no clue on how to take notes and likely sucks at studying them

Helped me honestly to bring my MacBook to class. Easy to add notes to the PowerPoint lectures

I thought everyone knew this. Laptop users in class are almost always completely distracted either by social media or acting a stenographers. I’d much rather jus sit, listen, and try to understand what’s being said.

Absolutely true. First kids bitched they wanted notes and PowerPoint slides available online. Then they wouldn't bother to print out or arrange so they could make comments or notes based off lecture. Then they just assumed class was optional because they already had the notes. 1000 level and 2000 level classes are sparsely attended daycare sessions.
LSU should eliminate any notes online and make students write. No where in life will you go to a meeting and just receive a summary of everything you need to know that day.

The real issue is that 95% of professors actually suck at their job.

I never took notes, found listening to be more effective.

I spent 50% of my time on tigerdroppings, 40% worried someone would see my posting and out me on tigerdroppings, and 10% paying attention to the lecture.

Professor job numero uno is research and publishing. Then committees. Then maybe teaching somewhere down the line.

Laptops are the worst thing ever for education.

The other issue is that 95% of degree programs suck.

I am positive everyone is different but my mind recorded and retained information a lot better when I was taking my notes by hand when compared to a computer.

I use my laptop to take notes for classes that are easy electives or general education courses. For my major coursework, I take notes by hand.
I definitely focus better while taking handwritten notes though, I'm usually on TD when I have my laptop out in classes.
