Why a 2nd shutdown over coronavirus might be worse than the 1st -- and how to prevent it

quote:

It's an outcome no one wants, but could become a "harsh reality": a second wave of shutdowns.

Weeks after lifting stay-at-home orders, some states are seeing record numbers of hospitalizations from Covid-19 as thousands more Americans get infected every day.

quote:

We're going to have to face the harsh reality in some states that we may need to shut down again," said Dr. Jonathan Reiner, a professor at George Washington University School of Medicine.
And the second wave of state shutdowns could be more damaging than the first.

quote:

"Because of quarantine fatigue, because of the economic effects of quarantine, another round of shutdowns might have even larger effects on businesses that may be on the edge of not being able to stay solvent," said Dr. Christopher Murray, director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington.
The economic toll from one round of shutdowns has been staggering. More than 44 million people in the United States have have filed for initial unemployment benefits since mid-March.

quote:

But the pandemic is far from over. More than 115,000 Americans have died from coronavirus, and hundreds more are dying from the virus every day.
"Covid's not taking a summer vacation," said Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious diseases expert and professor at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
"It's actually having new opportunities to spread."

Sorry, not listening to your pandering politics.
Once hospitals told me it's more important to protest in masses than to worry about the coronavirus, I was done with this pandemic.

How many hospitals are in danger of being overrun?

Those shutdowns in San Marcos were voluntary shutdowns done by businesses to clean and sanitize after outbreaks. The government did not order any shutdowns.

But the cops can just kill another guy of the right color and make it all go away, right?

Death rates are falling everyday and hospitals are “overcrowding” again. Sounds like hospitals are looking for more gubment gravy.

Abbott isn’t going to shutdown. Anyone pitching a second shutdown has an economic understanding of a toddler. You think a lot of businesses closed the first time? Try a second shutdown. Lots of places would throw in the towel immediately. And for what? This virus is far less deadly than we were told in March and April.

It’s getting pretty bad in Texas, particularly DFW.

And that’s measuring by hospitalizations rather than cases. Available ICU beds have been cut in half.

As long as death tolls don’t spike I don’t think we will see shutdowns though. I do know they are making targeted teams to avoid outbreaks in nursing homes.

Forgive the screwy scale to show the wide range of data on a single table without losing resolution. The only two you need to worry about comparing is the bottom two anyway.
