Damn you need to hand load.

My hand loads are $0.97 cents each at most. I say at most because that’s assuming 7 usages of the brass, get get over 10 shots out of each brass.

The only cost not included is my time - I don’t include that in loading costs because I love doing it. It’s fun and a hobby.

I do hunt public land or land I’m invited on to - $0 cost for that.

As I said I don’t do it to save money but I also get by pretty cheap.

Ok. Not doubting your expertise. I’m just an amateur. I understand that from a cow becoming pregnant to putting that beef on the shelf is a 2 year process.

But if feed is cheap why am I paying 13.00 for a 50 lb sack of cracked corn?

Correct 18months to 2years from birth to slaughter. We also don't feed straight corn. Its a blended grain bill. Approx. $400 per thousand lbs-ish, depending on the stage of feedout.

Americans can’t afford steak, they can barely afford groceries. At least that’s what I’ve been hearing for 5 years. Did prices suddenly drop? Did everyone suddenly get wage increases? What changed?

Interesting how the news gets stuff so wrong. For Any topic you know a lot about, you can spot so many flaws in reporting on the same topic.

My dad is almost 80 and still has over 700 head of cattle. He wants to get it down to 50 or so head that he can just "enjoy," but it would be stupid to exit right now.

He sold a cull bull this past week for more than he paid for it. Somewhere, somebody's cooking up some fat nuts I guess?

We just recently did a bunch of cow ultrasounds... much better than the old way to test for pregnancy.

Sounds like it’s the right to to exit with prices at an all time high, right?

Don’t you want to sell and get out now while it’s high? Isn’t it like buying stock low and selling at the peak for profit?
I’m probably missing something here but that’s how I understand it.
Seems like he’d make a fortune off 650 head at 80 years old.

You won't be doing this again for awhile. I $900 lb steer is $2,000+ and then you need to feed it for another 6+ months, another $500-$1,000. Then processing is another $1,200. That's over $4,000 cost. Add in any markup and you're looking at double what you paid 2 years ago. Inventory level is too low and won't recover for at least 2 years.

You will literally see CC anywhere from $5.99 to $9.99. It has jumped between those two for the last few years. It's normally $9.99, but you can almost always find it on sale for $5.99 if you're patient, and go to the grocery store enough to wait for it.

I swear some of you either never go to the grocery store, or you do without a brain.
Literally every item in the store has fluctuating prices.

Wasn’t there a story just a couple weeks ago about Mexican beef being stopped at the border because they all some disgusting worm parasites?

We never got to the point of opening it back up to beef. It was closed, then they announced they were re-opening it but never actually started importing, and then announced it was being closed again.

To think during the last dip in the cattle cycle, we thought it was crazy to pay $2500 for a bred heifer. The difference in this dip and the last is that there's a lot of ranchers not holding back heifers this time around, so the prolonged shortage could continue and draw out the population recovery time. Add in the aging populace of farmers and we could see a permanent change in US cattle populations

I've been buying it a few years now and I've never seen it that low where I am. Walmart has the small bag at $10.99 and the large bag at $18.99. Publix now sells the small bag for $12.99 and has never had the big bag. Elsewhere, not including Sam's or Costco, it is $10.99 for the small bag.

Yep, I completely sold out in 2023 due to an aging herd. I kept waiting for the market to decline, but it never did. Finally bit the bullet and got back in.

CNN: Beef prices are the new egg prices. They’re soaring

Not mentioned by CNN - the costs for ranching have been steadily rising for years and the profit margin has been going down. Corporations and foreign entities are buying up American farmland and ranches to control the food supply.
