Jim Al-Khalili is the GOAT, definitely prefer him over Sagan or Neil deGrasse Tyson.

There is actually strong arguments that what we call intelligent life is statically impossible to achieve. Everyone agrees bacteria exists in abundance. But making the jump to multi cell organisms is difficult. TL;DR version: we could be the alpha lifeforms of the universe.
Good Post.. I think your argument is supported by what is known as the Fermi Paradox.
fwiw..the link to this site blew my mind in the same way the OP does
Fermi Paradox Explain in plain english

Math and statistics have nothing to say about these probabilities.
Please explain...
Others have said it pretty well, but I'll add my explanation. Without knowing the probability of intelligent life, the number of habitable planets is not helpful data.
There is a tendency to think that our existence is proof that existence is standard. But that is a fallacy. We prove that life is possible, nothing more

I love "Wait but Why?" Some of the coolest articles I've ever read are on that website.

There are more stars in the sky than grains of sand on the earth. In fact, scientists estimate there are multiple stars for every grain of sand.

so for every star in the colossal Milky Way, there’s a whole galaxy out there. All together, that comes out to the typically quoted range of between 10^22 and 10^24 total stars, which means that for every grain of sand on every beach on Earth, there are 10,000 stars out there.

That's just incomprehensible. But hey, let me go finish some of these TPS reports, those are important as frick.

Andromeda is my favorite galaxy. It has upwards of a trillion stars but is not as massive as the Milky Way which has far less stars but more dark matter.
The Hubble's Deep Field View forced a new estimate of the number of galaxies in the observable Universe. The best approximation went from 100 billion to two trillion. That's a big increase.

After looking at that, I am 100% convinced that any day now. It may be 10 years from now. Maybe 10,000 years.
But eventually, baby Kal-el, or maybe even baby Kakarot will crash land on Earth, narrowly escaping the destruction of their home planet, growing up to be a mighty hero that saves Earth from complete destruction numerous times.
It will happen, I just want to be alive to witness it.

On the term "observable universe"
Mind blowing.
quote:
The word observable in this sense does not refer to the capability of modern technology to detect light or other information from an object, or whether there is anything to be detected. It refers to the physical limit created by the speed of light itself. Because no signals can travel faster than light, any object farther away from us than light could travel in the age of the universe (estimated as of 2015 around 13.799±0.021 billion years[5]) simply cannot be detected, as they have not reached us yet.
Mind blowing.

Nobody ITT has any idea what it means that there are a lot of stars out there. We literally have no idea of the significance or insignificance of that fact, because in and of itself it’s meaningless.
It says nothing about your life, nothing about the God question, nothing about the extraterrestrial life question.
If you had learned that the Milky Way was the only galaxy, would that make you believe in Jesus? Could you even imagine that having any relevance at all?
Does us being a tiny speck mean you shouldn’t love your neighbor or care for the people in your life?
Does it mean that you or, maybe more importantly, people around you should be able to act in ways they consider evil? Since it’s all so insignificant, who cares?
My point is that I don’t think y’all really believe it’s all that meaningful that the sun is just one of billions of stars.

There are some pretty interesting articles and books which anyone can follow on the different types of potential multi-verses. See below for a brief summary
Level I: A generic prediction of inflation is an infinite ergodic universe, which contains Hubble volumes realizing all initial conditions -- including an identical copy of you about 10^(10^29)m away.
Level II: In chaotic inflation, other thermalized regions may have different physical constants, dimensionality and particle content.
Level III: In unitary quantum mechanics, other branches of the wavefunction add nothing qualitatively new, which is ironic given that this level has historically been the most controversial.
Level IV: Other mathematical structures give different fundamental equations of physics.
The key question is not whether parallel universes exist (Level I is the uncontroversial cosmological concordance model - basically saying that there exists matter and space beyond our observable universe which obeys the same laws of physics we see) - but how many levels there are.

I don't know why anyone needs to believe in a mythical being to know how to behave in a civil manner, but hey that's me. Let's not side track this conversation.

I didn’t make that connection in my post. I can see that it seemed like I was doing that, but I wasn’t.

What sort of SPF would I need if I moved here for work? I have a standing offer in this god awful land of a trillion suns or Breaux Bridge. Which should I choose?
