re: Classic car prices are getting ridiculous

A car my dad and I rebuilt is fetching upwards of 20,000, whereas when we bought it, we got it for 2k. It has indeed gone crazy, even for cheap European cars from the 70s and 80s.

Just follow the stock market, then multiply the changes (up or down) by 10, and that is how classic car prices move.

I know a guy that drags stuff from Arizona to WI. About 4 years ago he had a 71 K5 6 cyliner 4 speed that needed a complete resto that he wanted 8k for.
At least it wasn't rusted out, which is the big thing up here.
Everything is affected by rust up in WI, I remember looking at some older A-body chargers that appeared to be rust free only to find a ton of bondo underneath.

I still have nightmares about all the exotic and muscle cars I passed up on in the 80's for 10-30k that are now well over 100k!!! The car market has just become insane- even cars I could have had 10 years ago for 20's are now in the 60k range. What's even more crazy is these nuts at auction that overpay on cars that affects the market!!

A 240z isn't what he is looking for. The next surge in classic car values is occurring in 80s & 90s Japanese cars.

Yep. Southern cars, and surprisingly those from Montana as they didn't use salt, are in high demand here.
Hell, there are guys that go to Texas and bring back trailer loads of pickup boxes to resell up here. We're talking newer trucks, not classics. 10 year old trucks are rusting over the wheelwells.

I have a 1980 Corvette that i paid too much for and have already sank 6000 K into that I will never get back. I love the loud arse growl and smell of gasoline. If I have had a bad week the first sunny day l’ll take it for a ride and all is right in the world. Now I’m that guy, trying to hold on to muscles and hair and driving the car I drooled over as a kid.

depends on what you are looking for. Lots of pony cars out there with hundreds of parts sources available on the 'net.

Are Mustangs just not your thing? Cuz they are all over Facebook marketplace for less than 10. Probably because they were the most popular car at the time.
None of them will be without rust though. They are 50 years old after all, and we aren’t in Arizona.
I wasn’t a mechanic either until I started working on mine. Stuff like suspension, brakes and interior stuff is actually pretty easy.
Body work and chasing engine gremlins forced me to call a real mechanic though. Carburetors suck.

Thanks boomers. Prices will be dirt cheap when they start dying...
Well if they didn’t design them and build them in the first place you wouldn’t have anything to bitch about.

Mid 60's Mustangs are cheap for classic cars.
Wish 1st gen Camaro's were as well. One of those will bring thousands for a pile of rust and no drivetrain.

As others have mentioned, a lot depends on make/model. I’ve learned to just keep looking and be patient. A lot of times I’ll watch a listing start off high, then I’ll keep watching and it’ll drop after a couple of weeks, then drop some more a week or two later, etc.
I emailed one guy about a truck and he wasn’t budging on the price. I emailed him again a month or two later, he still wasn’t budging, so I gave up on that.... but then he emailed me out of the blue about 6 months later and he was just ready to get rid of it by that point. So being patient and being the squeaky wheel sort of helped me in that case.

The guy said he doesn't have the ability to fix rust issues & believes $5000 to do so is high.
Actually rust/body issues aren’t the problem. Lack of any drivetrain is. I’m not paying that much for something with no engine or transmission. I can’t do transmission work. I can rebuild or get running an engine that doesn’t run great or run at all as long as its there but don’t have the ability to install a whole new one

My first car was a turbo 300zx, good luck finding one now some teenager didn't mod to death 20 years ago. I've seen a handful but they were priced so high you'd be better off just going and buying a brand new supra or GT350/Hellcat.
