If you can't find a muscle car, you might consider an easy to work on classic British Sports Car.

My husband had a early 70s truck, and it was just too high off the ground (no big wheels, it was just a BIG truck) for him to work on.

My husband, who is fairly practical, has since gotten interested in British cars. From that time period there are still cars available in that price range and parts are readily available.

There are lots of car clubs made up of people who enjoy the simpler body styles.

It’s all Joe Dirt’s fault. Now everybody wants a Hemi

Used to be able to find a good project car from the 60s-70s in running condition for under 6k that just needed some body and interior work and partial engine rebuild to increase performance.

If used to was 20 years ago, then obviously prices have increased for the same quality car.

I regret selling my blue 72 Chevy C10 and 77 K5 Blazer Cheyenne when I went to college. Partially restored both and sold them for college money so I could enjoy school without having to have a side job

I’d give anything to have them back

Yeah, in the 1990s I was like "man, 1971 camaros are cheap..$2000 in working condition".

Same car would go for $10,000+ now.

I hope you are joking. Those are 15k for cars with rust issues.

Right, seeing a 71 Camaro in 1994 is no different than seeing a 1999 Mustang GT now.

My dad is currently restoring his '71 C5. We also have a '72 K5 Blazer that still runs well but needs a facelift inside and out.

Roughly 10 years ago is time frame I’m thinking of. That’s when I had the aforementioned project trucks. I since haven’t looked for a new project until now

Both those trucks I bought in driving condition with a good body and average interior for 900 and 1100 dollars

I totally know what you mean I'd love to have something to tinker with on my days off, but nothing that I like is within my budget for a toy.....I had a 280z that enjoyed until kids came along then I sold it. I'd be happy to find one of those for less than a few k

You can blame all these restoration shows on TV.
Anything with rust will sell for crazy prices no matter the condition.
Supply and demand.

Saw one on BJ, their comment was that some of them rusted on the boat ride over here. They’re cool though.

This has played a major part of it. An old Ford pickup that sat untouched for decades under a tree is now a prized possession by the owner who at one time, would have paid you to haul it off.

Unfinished projects can be a steal if you find the right one.

I know a guy that drags stuff from Arizona to WI. About 4 years ago he had a 71 K5 6 cyliner 4 speed that needed a complete resto that he wanted 8k for.

At least it wasn't rusted out, which is the big thing up here.

Barrett Jackson has been a big part of it.

Asking prices went up years ago when people saw huge numbers on TV. Ignoring the fact those cars were perfect with paperwork while the heap of shite sitting the guys front yard was neither.

Very true.
And for some people, these auctions are the best way to get into a collector car. How many projects are started with no realistic budget, timeframe and resources? By the time they realize they are over their head and out of money, they could have bought something completed and be driving it.
