quote:

Berkeley may be the first city in the nation to pass a policy that will eliminate junk food and unhealthy items at grocery store checkout lines.

quote:

no longer be allowed to sell unhealthy food and beverages at the checkout line, and instead will be encouraged to offer more nutritious food and drink. Gone will be chips, candy bars, sodas and other sweetened beverages; only food items with no more than 5 grams of added sugars or 250 milligrams of sodium per serving would be allowed.

Council member Kate Harrison, who co-authored the ordinance, said the new regulations do not prohibit junk food entirely — retailers will still be allowed to sell the items in other parts of the store — “just not at the eye-level of a child” in the checkout lane.

The are literally just banned from the checkout line, not selling them at the store

Same people who agree with this would call you a racist of you want to ban junk food being bought with welfare and food stamps.

On the one hand I love freedom, on the other I hate fatties.

I like the goal they are trying to do here, but my God y’all about government overreach. How about parents just not let their children have candy all the damn time?

Taking responsibility from parents and putting it on the stores.

And we wonder why this country is in the fricking state it is in.

If I owned a grocery store, I'd take it one step further: since it is so hard to control a child's impulses, no children allowed. Boom.

Have you guys looked around lately??

We Americans are fat as hell. If you want junk food, walk your fatass over to Isle 6 and get it.

There's nothing being banned here. If this helps people eat a little healthier, then it's all good.

An idea so good you have to make it mandatory.

Nanny state!

ETA: this is like when New York banned soda over a certain size.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Where is that C.S. Lewis quote about righteous authoritarians from the other thread?

I just looked up the Berkeley city council members to see if this Kate was herself a fatty. She is not, but I’m pretty sure 75% of the Berkeley city council are lesbians and not the fun kind

I have nothing else to add
