a priest can be excommunicated for charging for sacraments, that’s called Simony.

Now, If you want an organist , cantor, violinist, etc etc etc ; yes, that cost money.

Also, if you want the whole church to yourself, then you have to pay the rent the space. As others mentioned, lock, unlock doors, maintenance, air conditioning , general wear and tear.

However, if you and your fiancé are ready to get married, and the priest has signed off that you’ve been thru marriage prep, you can show up at the church on a Thursday night, small party and get married for free (assuming you don’t have a lot of money to begin with)

the church we got married at charged us $1000 since we were non-members. If you were a member I believe there was no charge

Gulf Shores. $1000 and we are members. Worth it for a full Mass on a Saturday. They waived our baptism fee at the sister church in the same parish with same Priest the next year. I accepted the fee as several groomsmen were being full retarded.

Edit for panties up thy arse!

Most will give a discount for members.

For Catholic Churches, it’s Parishioners, not members. And even though you’re a parishioner, you likely get charged to cover or reimburse expenses directly for that event. If you’re not a parishioner, then you’ll likely be charged a higher fee.

It doesn't charge members but the pastor usually receives an honorarium for performing the service

then the member has a hundred other things they should be focusing their time on other than getting married.

Yes, my Baptist church charges. Nothing too, outrageous, just a few hundred for someone to arrange or set up the altar and sound system for whatever the couple (reasonably) wants, and afterwards, for the sanctuary and fellowship hall (if reception is on site) to be cleaned.

Especially if the reception hall is used, not only is it cleaned, but it is partioned into several Sunday school rooms on Sunday morning, so the chairs have to be reset as the teacher/class prefers.

A lot of churches (like the Catholic Church) don’t charge for the priest, but it’s customary to give them a donation. .

We gave ours the ring bearer.

My daughter was married at the Cathedral of St. Louis, King of France in St. Louis, Missouri.

What a beautiful church. If the wedding was in mid-June, I may have crashed it.

I believe the official term is ‘donation’. At least it’s tax exempt.

Im Catholic, 21 years ago all they told us when we got married was that it was customary to give the priest a gift.

My church charges between $1,400 - $2,400 dollars. That covers the cost of the preacher, someone to run the music and 2 “wedding planners”.

If you get married off site and you request a preacher it is $350 plus $2.00 a mile round trip. The $2.00 a mile goes to the church.

As a member of the church I’m not happy about that. To me, those prices are too high for a member or non member.

They could ask the pastor to come to their house, a park, or some other lower cost venue. A lot of pastors would happily do that for free.

Musician (organist & cantor) is easily $700 - $1000. Then another $250 - $400 for the staff to be present to open/close & tidy up the church. Then $350 for the preacher, you’re right in the range provided.

It costs money to run a church and most weddings are outside of normal operating hours.
