There were many different practices among many different tribes. They weren't all violent and they weren't all peaceful. It varied.

Meanwhile, you had this in Europe just a few hundred years before:

I don’t know that what he did was a whole lot worse than his contemporary explorers of the day. Those guys were pretty much genocidal maniac‘s who just wanted to conquer whatever they could kill anybody who was already there or got in their way.

It seems like all of his contemporaries also hated him though, which means he might’ve been a little bit worse than them. Or at least he was a huge a-hole to everyone around him and made himself unlikable
