I have a little kid who just showed me an essay he wrote on why we shouldn’t celebrate Columbus Day. Okay, great. Some of the facts cited are news to me. I had been hearing over the years that he was a bad guy and that indigenous peoples took some Ls.
But the stuff I’m reading strains credulity, in my opinion. Stuff about him boiling people in soap. What’s a good source that examines Columbus critically, the good, bad, and ugly?
I just want to know how much of the stuff about beheading kids etc is true.

He was just a great explorer. Exploration should always be celebrated.

The info you’re providing tells me Columbus was a winner. That’s how he got his own holiday.

Was Columbus am a-hole? Yes. Should we condone his horrible actions? No, of course not. Skhould we be emotionally attached to these things over 500 years later? No

His own contemporaries thought he sucked. He got shipped back to Europe in chains and the continent was named after Amerigo Vespucci instead of Columbus.

Actually, he got his own Holiday so that the government could pander to a large Italian immigrant block. Much like they did with the blacks and MLK.

Tell your kid the people that were here had been doing much worse things to their own kind for 1000 years before Columbus was even born.
