Researchers found 17% of boys and 9% of girls under the age of 19 were obese in 2014, up from 1% for each in 1985.
The 29-year study, published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, involved nearly 28,000 students in Shandong province.
The study used a stricter cut-off of the Body Mass Index (BMI) than the World Health Organization standard.
"It is the worst explosion of childhood and adolescent obesity that I have ever seen," Joep Perk from the European Society of Cardiology told AFP news agency.

Will power or is there something different in the food?

The entire world is becoming lazy and we blame video games, Or could it be steroids, growth hormones, and other "advances" in farming and agriculture?

PS: Mathematical mean due to higher male birth rate in China

I believe it. You see a lot of fat kids out there now. Schools used to just have the one fat kid, now they have a fat table in the cafeteria

Basically this.

I don't know the numbers, but I'd imagine there is a strong correlation between obesity and GDP per capita. Barring some exceptions in the Nordic countries, the higher your GDP per capita is, the higher your obesity rates will be.

Considering how many millions of rural Chinese inhabitants died of starvation during the midst of Mao Zedong's mid-20th century communist regime as the result of failed state and communal agricultural endeavors, I would consider this to be a sign of progress.

While there may be an increase in Chinese fatties out there, the BMI is a horrible tool to gauge obesity.

they have also seen a big rise in western fast food places.

KFC is popular as shite over there and it feels like there is one on every corner in the big cities.

67th GDP per capita, 23rd in obesity rate.

After looking at the numbers, the correlation tends to fall apart after a certain level of GDP per capita is reached, but by and large, the lowest obesity rates and some of the lowest GDP per capita ranks as well. I can't imagine this is shocking news to anyone either.

For adults, I don't think the muscle mass of pre teens varies much from kid to kid
