China has some large unknown cities

Where's OweO? There's a want for good topics here lately. In his absence, I'll attempt to get a little something rolling.
Let us all contemplate china for a moment. China is so gigantic that it contains eight of the top twenty largest cities in the world.
Imagine for a moment a city with 11 million people in it and never having heard of it before.
Well that's me with Wuhan. Wuhan has 11 million people and prior to this disease, I never knew it existed.
We all know about the largest cities in places like Europe and South America for instance. But China however is so immense, that they can have numerous megalopolis cities that are as globally obscure as any small or medium sized American city.
Chengdu
Guangzhou
Tianjin
Baoding
Wuhan
Those are all Chinese cities with 11 million or more people and I'm only recently aware of one of them and peripherally aware of another.
I'm sure some of you OT globe trotters know all about Wuhan and these other obscure Chinese cities but honestly. Who here actually knew of Wuhan China prior to all this?
It's interesting to imagine a city containing 11 million people and not knowing it exists.
A city larger than New York but as obscure to americans as a small american city would be to the Chinese.
Let's all just sit with this for a moment.
Let's all just meditate on the enormity of china.
Oh and good morning.

It should be obvious this is due to it being in a communist country. They can’t exactly do what they want and express themselves freely. Places like New York are known for their unique culture not the amount of people there. Communists don’t like unique culture they like conformity

Population is a poor way to measure the true "size" of a city.
Lagos, Nigeria has a larger population than NYC. Where would you move your Fortune 500 Company?

China is roughly the same size as the US and has 1.4B people. So it’d go without saying that they have to live somewhere. So 11 million in one city really is a drop in the bucket.

Whether the city is desirable to do business in or not has no bearing on the size of the city

:Raiseshand:
Only due to having been there for work
Otherwise, it's impossible that I would have heard of it (and some others which are quite large).

If the United states went to war with China, it's interesting to think that we could conceivably kill the equivalent of our entire population and they would still have over 1 billion people.

Wuhan, that's a lot of cabbage. There are videos posted showing that city pretty much shut down,no trains, train station closed,no vehicle traffic in the street and no foot traffic.

Well I'm aware of that but the overall point is that if Wuhan was located anywhere else in the world, we would very likely know a lot more about it than we currently do.
In china, Wuhan is just one more large city in a country filled with them.

What? I don't think you are following the thread. Why would population be a poor way to measure the size of a city?

A small town in China has 5 million people.

There's been a dearth of good topics around these parts OweO and it occurred to me this morning why that is.
You haven't been around.
Now if you'd be so kind as to cough up one of your most excellent threads, we'd all appreciate it. Even your haters.
I'm a poor substitute.
