Theres a lady from China that works on our floor. I asked her yesterday if the Corona Virus had infected her hometown. She said no, we are a small city, only 500,000 people. Just 2 people are infected.

What? I don't think you are following the thread. Why would population be a poor way to measure the size of a city?

8,000,000

14,000,000

No, but if you want a good fiction book with Secret Cities I recommend the following:

_Daemon
_Freedom
_Influx
_Kill Decision
_Change Agent

But as for non-fiction Secret Cities, there are tons of material about it on YouTube, Podcasts like Stuff they "Don't Want You to Know", etc.

Guangzhou(formerly Canton) is pretty well known. Today best known as a manufacturing hub. Chengdu has lately become a world class city.

Me either.

I had heard of these three before, though.

Keep in mind though, that these Chinese mega-cities count a lot of spread out population. Some of them cover what would be more like a state to us, and their population density isn't close to other major world cities.

Shanghai doesn't really fit into that category, but Chongqing, Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou, etc. do.

Chongqing is considered the world's largest "city" at over 30M people, but it's 82,403 square kilometers. And only 366 people per square kilometer. That's about the same size as South Carolina or Ireland... but with 5-6x as many people.
