I use to do business in Chengdu.
We always said the largest city no one has ever heard of. Originally more of a farm belt city hidden back behind the mountains.
It was nice and heck had a KFC and Pizza Hut (although the menu was a little different )

What's also crazy about China is that while it's like the 3rd or 4th largest country by area, i'd guestimate almost half of that area is uninhabitable b/c of it being a desert or too mountainous. Just look at a satellite image of the entire western part of China. There's very few people living in that enormous area.
I'm sure their population density skyrockets when you remove the portions that aren't habitable, which is basically what India is.
