So since child support only goes to 18 I see a lot of people mention this. At 18 do you stop supporting your child or just stop giving to the ex?

And that is a general question to anyone paying child support.

Will always support my child. Always! But I'd like the be the one determine what the money goes for. Not shite for her. For him.

Don't most parents stop financially supporting their child at 18/graduation unless they go on to college? Not sure that's specific to folks with kids out of wedlock.

If you've already had a verbal agreement for 14 years the court/judge will recognize that and basically put that verbal agreement on paper (as long as both parties still agree on doing it the same way). It's not like the court's decision is the end-all-be-all and you HAVE to abide by what they say, regardless of verbal agreement. If you and the ex already have a system in place that you both agree on then they'll just follow that, except make it official by putting it on file.

My ex (who is still close friends with me and my daughter) and I came up with an agreement before we even went into custody hearings because we felt no matter the outcome the payment would be unjustifiably high either way. We basically sat down and figured up how much money my daughter requires per month roughly, divided it in half, and agreed that no matter what the court says we're paying that amount. We both agreed that we wouldn't want the other one struggling in their regular lives due to child support, so we set it at $200 a month without ever knowing which one of us would be paying that amount (we both had a pretty equal shot at primary custody). That $200 monthly is what you'll see on the court documents and official child support documents because we used our right to override what the court suggested.

TLDR: if you and the ex are still on decent terms, just sit down and come up with something you both agree upon that won't break you. The court will uphold that amount as long as both parties agree to it.

Unless she's a bitch and hates you or vise versa - THEN all bets are off.

Pretty sure if the kid goes to college the court can extend child support through 19 years old

I can remember my mom saying she received $125 per month for me and another $125 per month for my sister until we were both 18.

That was 23 years ago for me.

Thanks Dad!

Whatever it is its bullshite any man should have to pay any type of child support with 50/50 custody. Just because I bust my arse for a better life doesn't mean I should
Be punished to support the mother of the child. If that was the case then the parent that has the means of full support, the mental capacity, the stability to do so should be awarded full custody while the other parent has every other weekend.

Your question was answered correctly as it pertained to my situation, they used a calculation worksheet to derive a payment. Allow me to stress that you should leave nothing open to interpretation, if the payment gets set you best give her that amount. If you are ordered to provide anything then get it in writing if you agree to do anything which is different. If you do anything to tick her off she can use the system to make you squirm. Trust me, a non-custodial father is guilty until proven innocent if she decides to use the system

In Alabama, they add the income of the custodial parent and the non custodial parent together.

They then have a chart that shows how much "support" for the child based on that income.

The support of the child is then based on the percentage of the total income the NCP makes times the support figure.

Example

Custodial Parent Makes $40k

NCP makes $60 k

Total income is $100,000. Chart says that $500 is the corresponding support amount.

NCP pays 60% of $500 or $300 per month.

There are other things that can be factored in, such as insurance costs.

This.

If your kid is on your health insurance, it will go a long way in decreasing your payments. At least it did for me. I was also required to keep a life insurance policy of at least $100,000 with my son as the beneficiary (already had more for him) until I was done paying support.
