Agreed.
I never put one on my son and always thought they were stupid before we had him, but I now see why someone would use one after going through the terrible twos and threes.

In a place like an airport I can understand it, too easy for a kid to walk five steps when you're looking in your bag and then it's lost in the masses.
At a grocery store? Learn how to parent.

I'd say both. On one hand, it makes you look like a shitty parent because you can't control your child. On the other hand, if you have a child with special needs or 2 or more really small children and one or more is wild, at least you're keeping them somewhat contained and safe.

The monkey backpack looking one always makes me laugh
my wife and I always try to snap pictures of parents with leash kids and send them to each other for a laugh

This.

Apparently these parents can't be inconvenienced with the troubles of holding your child's hand.

I just make my daughter hold my hand or hold onto me in crowded, public places

Useful. Not a damn thing wrong with them.

I would argue that a shocking collar around the waist could be just as effective without the trashy back pack

Lack of having control of your own child and just being a lazy parent. Kids are not to be leashed like dogs.

I think they are hilarious and a fabulous idea.
Completely agree. I hope mine would have one of the tension release buttons like on dog leashes so I could mess with the kid too.

They should be fricking required. Every person should take an IQ test when they go to the D.M.V. to get their driver's license. If you don't score in a high enough percentile, then you get a small notation on your license right next to the organ donor symbol. This symbol indicates that you are required to have your kids on a leash and muzzled at all times when youre out in public.

Baby drinks was a runner when he was little. I would put him down and if he saw something interesting he was GONE.
I never put him on a leash but I probably should have. A few times in parking lots I would push my buggy toward my car and go running the other direction after him.
Mr drinks did tie him to his waist band while surf fishing.

If you had a 2 year old like mine, you'd be thrilled to have a leash.

Great posts by those who are quick to judge a situation they may know nothing about....
They can be life saving for a special needs child who is a runner. Many children with autism tend to be runners and a harness can be very helpful for their own safety. Has nothing to do with being "bad/lazy parents" just the child may not understand the danger of running into the street.

Then he should be left in his cage...
