How do you lose a 4 year old on a hiking trip with freezing temps?

Happens all the time around here, no kids die.

If you're taking a 5 year old on any sort of dangerous hike, I'm not sure how you lose the kid.

The explanation that he was told was given by the father was that he tripped and fell and when he got up the kid was gone.

Dumbass dad should have used the poop defense.
It can lock me up for 20-30 minutes.
Officer, nature called. I dropped my pants and he wandered off. I thought I could catch up to him easy but by the time I could finish he was gone and I could find him anywhere.

Hiking might be the most worthless activity that people base their days around

Getting excited about some run of the mill restaurant date.
Hiking is soul soothing and relaxing. Particularly if you're in a scenic place.

Here's info from someone we know working at the hospital during the holiday weekend:
Father claimed to have "hurt his knee" and the son walked off. Potentially an autistic child (could not confirm.) Son's body was found bruised all with no water in his lungs.
It's being investigated as a homicide.

You're going with this on a board full of alcoholics who use that as their identity?

Dads fault.

I gave you a down vote for the misleading headline. I clicked on this thread thinking a nurse had neglected her job. Please do better next time.

I hiked to this spot last week with my daughter. Something I imagine she will remember for the rest of her life.

The father will probably be charged.

Corcoran said his department's officers found no signs of foul play during their initial investigation. But in his opinion, "there was no logical reason to be out there with a child that young," he said. "Most adults wouldn't even do the same in that type of weather."
Hicks, the EBRSO spokesperson, said the sheriff's investigation is ongoing and detectives are awaiting a cause of death from the coroner.

There's more to this story than has been told I suspect. It doesn't make sense.

Yep, took my kids on the mountains at an early age, they are hooked.
My granddaughter and her friends choose hiking over other options.
