I think the first thing that got me interested in this stuff was when Airfrance 447 went down. I watched a documentary about it and got sucked down the rabbit hole. I mentioned the Tenerife Airport Disaster the other day to a group of people, and none had ever heard of it. I was shocked; but then again, I guess not everyone goes down this rabbit hole

For me it was AA 191. We were headed for Maui about 7 days after this one, on a DC10
I couldn't sleep the entire week and 'white knuckled' the entire flight (12 years old).

If you liked Cockpit Confidental, checkout AeroSavy. It's an online blog run by a 757/767 captain and he has a lot of good info.

Yeah every time I end up down a Wikipedia plane crash rabbit hole (yes this is a thing, don't judge), I inevitably end up re-reading the AF 447 transcript. The was probably the first one the fascinated me too.

I think this is the documentary that was on Netflix YouTube - NOVA - Crash of Flight 447

We got down below the clouds which were less than 1000 ft
Did that once coming into Iceland. Heavy, heavy fog covering the area. On approach, I guess the pilot couldn't see shite, so full military power, back up to circle and wait. Pilot was like "We are going to have to wait until the fog clears, we have about 50 minutes of fuel, we should be on the ground in half an hour." Twenty minutes later, we bingoed to another airfield to refuel. Chilled at this tiny, remote airfield for about an hour waiting for the fog to clear at the other spot, watching the Icelandic reindeer watch us. They had "wtf is this?" looks on their faces.

SO's brother was on the FBI dive team that was part of the TWA 800 recovery. One of the many things in that career that messed with his head.

Probably easier in an F18 vs a damn prop plane like I was on
Coming in on a COD, not a fun thing to do. What carrier?

I met a Tenerife survivor once, years ago. Horrifying story.

Wow. Did this person go into great detail about the experience? I don’t know how people who come out alive from those kinds of catastrophic events manage to move on.

This is an animation with ATC audio of a situation with a *few* similarities to Tenerife. I challenge any pilot to listen to it without screaming something along the line of "LISTEN THE frick UP!" at their computer. Gets good around the 1:10 part.
