Last couple of days have been rough. My wife is a perfectionist. She insists on having total control over everything Christmas - all the presents we give, everything involving us hosting her family on Christmas Day, etc. All the food has to be perfect, the house has to be completely spotless, everything must function perfect and on perfect timing, etc.

Well, life happens, and while we always have a nice time, life happens, and it's not perfect. Perfect is an unreasonable expectation. But this causes her endless amounts of stress, which results in her not only being unable to enjoy the holiday, but her lashing out at those around her, causing them to be unable to enjoy it as well.

This only happens at Christmas. The rest of the year, she is perfectly reasonable and able to roll with the punches. I don't know if she is trying to impress people, or maybe just impress herself.

Combine that with the fistfight I saw at the local deli on Christmas Eve, and the screaming match I witnessed at WalMart on Christmas Eve (Had to go pick up something from the orange tower). It's just becoming too much.

Next year, part of me wants to say screw the presents, the dinner, etc, and just all of us go on a cruise.

It used to be way too stressful for me. This year was much different though. We have two kids and keep it centered around them being home for the festivities. The travel used to be what got to me trying to see everyone and whatnot.

We will go see my family this weekend, but that schedule has been set for a month now.

Well its definitely not the least stressful holiday, but I wouldn't call it too stressful.

This should solve the stress.

We had dinner with family and friends and that was it. No gifts, travel like we usually do, etc. We knew going in that Xmas was going to be very depressing this yeas so we kept it simple and to a minimum.

Well to me, she seems like she is idolizing what people think of her which is making her do this. frick all that, who gives a shite what anyone thinks especially on Christmas which is supposed to be a fun day.

Get your wife some help. If you get stressed out because of a holiday, especially Christmas....just wow. Can't get so caught up in something that you forget to live life in the process.

3 years ago, we took the kids on a 7-day Disney Cruise the week of Thanksgiving. Avoided all the family get-togethers, and the stress associated. While more expensive than a lot of other cruises, The onboard service on Disney cruises is exceptional. Best Thanksgiving yet.

Unless small children are involved you might consider Hawaii instead. It is actually great for Christmas (or Thanksgiving) the nicer hotels do large traditional Christmas banquets and everything about Hawaii (especially on islands not name Oahu) just fosters calm and relaxation.

This was the last Christmas I revolve around family. Using the only few days I have off to deal with holiday travel just so I can hang out with mostly trashy people is officially over.

If my parents want to see me, they can come here.

We had zero family this year. Just me, the wife, and the dogs. We slept in, made brunch, drank, watched tv, and made an outstanding beef tenderloin for dinner.

Absolutely no stress or obligations. It was fantastic.
