Instagram boyfriends become Instagram husbands become Instagram families

Caring so much about what other peripheral people think is a pretty big red flag

My wife is a perfectionist. She insists on having total control over everything Christmas - all the presents we give, everything involving us hosting her family on Christmas Day, etc. All the food has to be perfect, the house has to be completely spotless, everything must function perfect and on perfect timing, etc.

Maybe talk to the wife about this instead of a sports forum.

Scrooge! I’m determined to enjoy it next year. Even if it means I start planning in July.

ETA: by planning I mean the mental preparation of requesting simplicity from the family. I just want to spend time with family. Buy toys for the little kids. My favorite thing about Christmas events is watching the kids open their presents, play with their new toys while the adults sit around visiting and enjoying the company.

There are now people we do not go out for an evening or on trips with any longer because of this. I am all about the experience and not how it looks in social media photos

Is this mostly a parent thing? I don't really have this issue with people ever, but I don't really spend time with people + their kids. And we aren't really young enough for the whole "Insta girl" thing either.

I've noticed people get entirely stressed out over little shite during the Christmas season - IDK if it's the financial burden most suburban folk don't plan for or what. You don't have to go into debt because of stupid keep up with the joneses expectations. It's ridiculous these days. Your kids will survive if you don't mortgage the home and extend the lease on your Mercedes SUV (that you can't afford) just to buy them the latest and greatest just so you can show it off on social media. You don't have to buy new suits and dresses for company parties and mass/church. Fuggin relax, people.

Sooooo because we are friends IRL/fb, I don’t want to call any one person out, but it’s probably easy to figure out. Said person is about 7 years younger than me and she will ruin an event if she doesn’t get the perfect photo. We have events planned around going places just to get that perfect family photo in front of the pumpkins. I don’t know if it’s her age or only having one kid or what, but I just don’t care that much. If I do get a great photo with my kids, I love it. If I don’t, I don’t. Sometimes the imperfect photos are what I love. When I only had one kid, I happened to get nothing but amazing photos because one kid cooperating is much easier than multiple.

Now—I can ruin a great picture by having my eyes closed whilst my kids are looking adorable. If it’s appropriate, I may ask for a retake. But say we’re experiencing meltdowns from all the kids, parents are over it, messing with lighting, then no, I just let that crap go.

*off to snoop*

But really, that sounds like the worst to deal with. I agree that candid photos of kids are so much nicer, and you have the double whammy of not ruining their fun for it.

You won’t find her in a single one of my Christmas photos because any picture she’s in has to be approved to go online. I once posted a picture of someone else holding their Christmas gift and she happened to be in the background; I was promptly texted by her mom and told to take it down because it wasn’t flattering. I didn’t even notice she was in it.

gotta be stressful. Anyway, moral of the story: fb and insta has caused events to suck because for some, they revolve around getting the perfect picture instead of enjoying the experience.

I think my telling her to get over it and get a damn grip after she told me to take my daughter away because she was ruining the family picture, as I chugged my mimosa at 9 am, was my way of getting some order. But I do feel helpless.

I think it's telling that a post about stressful Christmas's brought the ladies of the OT out in full force. Now none of them are to blame of course. It's all in-laws, or husbands, or extended family.
