I'd be ok with 4 day school weeks if kids are getting no summer vacation. The 180 day school year is so far behind the times. We should be at 220 at minimum. But I could understand 208 in the short term.

that's pretending that 40 hrs/week is still necessary

Necessary? It's productive.

If you are an employee, you shouldn't work 40 hours if you can support your lifestyle while working less.

If you are an employee, you should require 40 hours if you can staff appropriately with that requirement.

Who cares what the child wants?

This is one of the greatest issues with this country today. Kids don't know shite. If you have not realized yet that you were an idiot before your 18th birthday ---- you are clearly still an idiot.

What about the parents? Should they all take a day off of work to make the kids happy? Should they pay for daycare or babysitters?

Until the parents are on a 4 day work week, this is a ridiculous concept.

I’m not a fan of it. After a certain amount of time the kids are done, no more learning takes place. Your brain needs time to digest what you’ve learned and take mental breaks, tacking on 2 more hours to a school day doesn’t help the kids out any. At that point it’s simply trying to make sure they hit the required minutes so they teach the same amount of time as the 5 day but the quality of learning isn’t happening though.

Also whether schools like it or not they’re babysitters for many families. Less so obviously for high schoolers but districts where elementary schools move to a four day week put parents in a bind.

I can’t imagine a 4 day week not being a positive at the high school level in rural areas

great, so your paying for babysitters and entertainment chaperones for the entire school then since most people work 5 days a week and cant afford to pay someone to watch there kids so teachers can get an extra day off?

Well damn my reading comprehension really sucks. My apologies.

And your reading would have been how much worse had you only read four days a week?

Likewise, if you haven’t realized how little you know at any current age, you are likely an idiot

We had half days every Wednesday. That works out well. Teachers were still available for tutoring sessions and they would usually give detention during then too. If you skipped Wednesday detention, you get Saturday school.

They get so many random days off already. Especially in LA with Mardis Gras.

What fricking high school kid needs a babysitter or entertainment chaperone. This is a rural area where many could get some vocational work in or help out around the house or possible farm

However, a study by the Education Commission of States found those savings only amount to 2.5 percent at most.

Only 2.5%? That's not an insignificant amount--especially if bundled with other cost-saving methods.

Overall, there is not enough research to determine if 4-day weeks are positive or negative overall.

So why the switch back all of a sudden then?

Savings is in bus travel, and a little in utilities. Staff is on salary, so 4, 5, 6 days, doesn't matter.

And meals.

My high school. It's Summerville, not Summersville. What's happening right now is an abomination. It's always been a lower performing school system in the region, but seemed to improve in many areas under the most recent superintendent and schedule change.

This was sold to the public at a nearby school district as a way to attract teachers without paying as much as urban districts.

When the proposal was first announced to the faculty, they broke out into applause.

Read between the lines.

Why did they go back to the old schedule if the new 4 day schedule showed improvement?

It's actually been changed to 75,600 minutes in Texas, which helped make the topical schedule change possible.
