Chad ‘Ochocinco’ stashed away 83% of his NFL salary; bought fake jewelry, lived in stadium

“Why am I driving a Rolls Royce when I’m Ocho? Why am I buying a $50,000-$80,000 watch? Time is free, so what am I paying for?” he asked on the Club Shay Shay podcast. “There’s nothing I can buy that’s bigger than my name alone.”
The former wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals and the New England Patriots made close to $49 million over 11 NFL seasons, according to Spotrac — and using his unique money mindset, he claims to have saved 83% of that astonishing total.
What makes Johnson’s money management extra impressive? Many iconic NFL stars have gone broke after falling prey to the league’s extravagant spending culture and other financial challenges like divorce or suffering a career-ending injury.
Ochocinco wore fake jewelry from Claire’s, only ever leased his exotic cars and flew on budget airlines to save money. He even admitted to living in the Bengals’ stadium for two years so he didn’t have to rent or buy a house.

Apple not far from tree.

In 2012, Johnson played for the Miami Dolphins during preseason but was released following his arrest for domestic violence.
quote:
Johnson and Lozada married on July 4, 2012. The day before the wedding, a fan reached out to Johnson on Twitter for prayers after losing her husband the previous month. Johnson, in return, invited her on an all-expenses-paid trip to the wedding.[99]
On August 11, 2012, Johnson was arrested on a charge of domestic battery according to the Davie, Florida police.[100][101] Johnson allegedly headbutted Lozada following an argument. Johnson was released the following afternoon on $2,500 bond.[102] Later that day, he was released by the Miami Dolphins.[103][104]
On August 14, 2012, Lozada filed for divorce claiming that her marriage was "irretrievably broken."[105] The divorce was finalized on September 19, 2012.[106]
On September 21, 2012, Johnson entered a plea of no contest to misdemeanor domestic battery, avoiding jail time in an agreement with prosecutors and Lozada.[107] Johnson received a year of probation.[108]

How did he live in the stadium? I know you have a bathroom and showers, but where did he sleep? On a cot? They let him bring in a bed and put it in an empty room?

Really should have pinched pennies to get that extra 2%.

The headbutt happened when HBO Hardknocks was at the Dolphins. I remember the meeting they cut him

locker rooms have everything a house has except a full sized bed.
all he needs is a cot to sleep on which is super easy to do
even LSU has lounge chairs in the locker room for players, lay one down fully reclined and its an instant bed.
sounds like the guy was super smart, and thats very rare among NFL players today

Pretty common in baseball, especially in triple A when a guy is sent down for rehab, knows he won’t be there long enough to get into a lease

Kanye lived in the Mercedes Benz dome in ATL while working on Donde. It’s possible.

I saw this awhile back. I thought it was funny. He was kind of flashy when he played so it makes it funnier to know it was all fake.

He’s much smarter than I ever suspected.

Actually its not. More NFL players are financially aware today than ever before.
I remember watching something with Emmitt Smith and he was talking about how when he was a rookie Jerry Jones told him the best thing to invest in was real estate, but back then they didn't have classes on finance for rookies. No one told you that everyone who knew how to get in touch with you would call because they knew someone who wanted them to invest into some bullshite that a lot of players would fall for.
And whatever the special was I was watching was talking about how a lot of players who came from nothing.. Its like they feel bad for being successful and they try to help out people who come to them. Because evidently they tell rookies they need to learn how to say an important word.. NO.
But players today are much smarter with their money.

Dude missed out by a decade on contracts, that’s chump change now for how good he was at his peak
