Bottom line, you can pray & worship alone. Not essential to gather in a large group.

1st amendment. Can the governor deem the press unessential and shut it down during this?

I'm not trying to argue. I just think that everything ought to be protected equally.

‘Tis a non-sequitir. That was weeks ago and the Mayor doesn’t get to decide what is and isn’t public in this context.

The police can come up to your door. If the gathering is large enough and there's obvious signs you have numerous people there (this can even be gleaned from number of cars parked, etc.) then there are exceptions to the requirement of a warrant.

No. But that's a different animal than free exercise of religion. To extend the analogy a bit, while the governor could stop holding press conferences due to social distancing fears, he couldn't require all press to cease operations. Nor could he stop people from praying in smaller groups/in their home.

I appreciate the articulate responses even though I do not agree with each and every response. I thought I’d be met with O-T sarcasm, so I appreciate the courtesy!

I did. I know of boat and tractor manufacturers that are still operating.

I always give civil answers to civil questions (and jerky answers to jerky questions).

Assembly is one of the most important facets in many religions.

It isnt essential for me to buy cigarettes but it is for others.

Religious Roy's needs are less important than Smoker Steve's?

I agree, but in the good book it says “where 2 or 3 are gathered in my name....”

No, my whole point was that there’s an unnecessary redundancy in the system if human interaction should be left to a minimum.

My point is I see no difference in a nonessential manufacturing plant with 100 employees being in the same building than 100 churchgoers in the same building if they're still observing social distancing guidelines.

So he could mandate papers no longer be printed and allow online/tv/radio only?

That's a harder question to answer and perhaps only answerable in theory since, to my knowledge, no one has ever affirmatively tried to shut down any arm of the press in the history of the U.S. The closest stuff you would have are defamation cases where individuals have sued newspapers/media outlets for publishing information. That's a whole subset of law, though.

(You also have Twitter and YouTube banning certain users but since those are private companies they can ban whoever they like for the most part.)

I could see them limiting the number of people allowed inside the printing offices, but probably not shutting down print production. Granted most papers 'publish' on-line but there's an argument to be made that not everyone has internet access.

You can't block an accessway. BLM can protest on the side of the street all they want, which I support even if I don't agree with the message.

Devil's Advocate here:

You are basically saying that BLM's rights end as soon as they infringe on someone else's rights.

Well by that logic, This pastor's right to free speech and assembly ends where the community's right to not be subjected to unnecessary health risks begin.

Basically its not really about this one church and this one pastor, it is more about stopping this so the next guy doesn't see that the powers that be aren't enforcing the assembly rules and decides to hold court of his own. Before we know it, every money grabbing preacher would be back open putting the congregation in danger as well as anyone who encounters one of the attendees in public places such as the grocery store.

This post is not intended on making a stance on whether or not the restrictions in place are overblown or not, I simply am pointing out that this is more about enforcing the rules to the masses than anything else.

Public does not mean "government-owned" here.
