Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries officials have cited managers at three local restaurants suspected of illegally selling customers a type of Asian catfish without properly labeling it as such.

Restaurants in certain states, including ones with big catfish industries such as Louisiana, are prohibited from selling swai as "catfish."

I imagine this goes on at a lot of restaurants

A lot of fish is sold incorrectly and it’s not necessarily done maliciously by the restaurant/store.

Substituting one bottom feeder for another doesn't seem as egregious as selling sliced pig rectum as calamari but you'd like to at least know what you're getting.

True, when I was in the business, we would order catfish, but sometimes the supplier would bring swai filets. They are practically indistinguishable.

Swai /Basa is basically a vietnamese catfish so not sure how they are in trouble for advertising catfish. It taste much better than pond raised catfish anyways.

I’ve never seen a restaurant label swai. Yet every time I go to restaurant depot I see swai going out the door by the truck load.

I’d never eat seafood grown in Southeast Asia that stuff is gown in sewer quality water.

Swai taste mealy and is easy to pick out if you pay attention.

I read something a few years ago that over 40% of all white fish sold in the US is labeled wrong; they literally have no idea what kind of fish it is

Catfish is around 80-90 a case and Swai around 30 a case. It's to cut cost.

Don't know about swai, but basa are river catfish, thus no not as much as a muddy taste like the catfish you get in the late months of summer. Tried it a few times when I was in the food business. And yes much cheaper too.

Except Swai is farm-raised in Vietnam where using antibiotics are legal. It's not held to the same inspection standards as catfish raised in the US.
quote:

one study found that Vietnamese imported fish like swai had the greatest number of health violations of imported seafood in the U.S.

Here's an article about why this is more of an issue than just "substituting one bottom feeder for another"

SO are they going to start giving tickets to every restaurant that uses Chinese crawfish tails in etoufee or tuna steaks from Vietnam or the frog legs bc that is what the majority uses. Not sure how the swai is different.

There are specific laws for restaurants and catfish.

Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee have statutes requiring that the country of origin of catfish served in restaurants be clearly identified.

We used to have a place that listed Basa separately. No idea if anyone ever ordered it. They closed.

Basa tastes better than regular Louisiana Catfish. If we fried both side by side, I bet less than 10% of people would tell the differerence and choose LA Catfish.

The Basa is cleaner looking and the filet whiter.

Great, I didn't say that it was harmless or a non-issue. I said that in my own personal opinion, it seemed less egregious than ordering seafood and getting rectum.
