So what you're saying is parents are irresponsible and don't know where their little bastard child is the majority of the time so it's just easier to get them a cell phone to check on them.
How about the parents know where their kid is and what time their arse needs to be picked up.

A) You have kids?
B) What are their ages?

He said that and if you don't get your little kid a cell phone they will likely kill themselves. It was a high quality post.

If you drop your kids off anywhere but school, it's fine to give them a phone.
My 6yr old has one because it was cheap to add to family plan.

But in reality the kids phone is really just his 2nd phone to hide the porn addiction from his wife.

9 .. We moved away from the family and they kept calling me to talk to him. Now they can call him. At first it was only family he could give the number. He's now 11 and we told him can give it to his friends starting this year.

The way we handled it was to keep a cheap prepaid phone as an extra. Whenever the kid would overnight with friends, church trip, whatever, the extra phone went with her but it wasn't "hers". They both got their own around thirteen, I think.

You're gonna run into an issue here where people confuse NEEDS with WANTS. There may be, under certain circumstances, when a kids might need access to a phone in their pocket...but those are probably few and far between if we're being honest with ourselves, right? This may be hard for the sub 30 crowd to grasp, but there really was a tome when kids managed just fine not being able to be in touch 24/7.
Now...as a parent I like my oldest having his phone with him when he's out...but that's my issue more than his. He'd likely be just fine without one, but I've now grown accustomed to being able to reach all the important people in my life instantly, so I WANT him to have one so that I can do that.

We waiting till he was 11, which happened to be right when he started 6th grade....

10 year old wants one, but she has to wait until 13.
(she does get a circa 2004 flip phone to take on overnights or trips in case of emergencies)

The correct answer to "when to give your kids a cell phone" question is when they are responsible enough to have one.
My 8 year old is responsible enough

I'll give my daughter a cell phone whenever she starts going places by herself, whether that be by walking, bike, etc
so probably 10 or 11ish?

I read this a while back in an article where a mother asked this question.
quote:
Question
Along with the majority, if not all of his friends, our middle school aged son has a cellular phone. It seems that most parents monitor their child's text message activity.
Applications are offered that allow one to monitor for any social network activity and read any text messages sent or received. You can also view their phone call logs, phone contacts and web browsing history. These "apps" can use the phone's GPS to track its location on a map.
How much, if any, should parents monitor their child's cellular phone activity?
quote:
Answer
Before answering your question, I have to remind you that a middle school age child does not need and should not have a cell phone. They are unnecessary, and completely so. If you want your child, in some specific situation, to be able to call you, then go to WalMart, buy a $20 basic phone, put some minutes on it, and give it to said child on a situation-by-situation basis. As for "But all of his friends have them!" I will simply say that cowardice takes many forms. Sorry, but I'm going to call the proverbial spade the proverbial spade here. Cowardice is amok, epidemic in today's parenting culture. It is the inability to say "no" and stick by it.
As your question indicates, "ownership" of a cell phone by a child this age opens a Pandora's box. You are asking whether to monitor texts and such BECAUSE of the potential of sexting and sending inappropriate photos and the like. You are not confident that he will use the phone in completely appropriate ways (in which case he doesn't need a cell phone...see above) or you wouldn't be asking the question. So, why, if this is a strong potential, did you give him a cell phone in the first place?
I'm going to help you make your life simple again. Take the phone. Tell him you made a mistake. Do it today.
As for "Should parents monitor a child's cell phone activity?" my response is "C'mon, people! Do you not know what the word 'parent' means???"

I think 10 is okay. Girls are generally more mature at that age than boys anyway.
The problem isn't the actual phone, it's parents that have raised their kids with the idea that the phone is a toy. We've all seen bratty kids kept quiet because mom or dad gives the little one their cell phone to play a dumb arse game.
Cool thing is - you can take them away if they are not being responsible, or flat out shut the shite down with a phone call or a log in online.

Bunch of "get off my lawners" in here.
If you can't grasp the fact that a smart phone is more than a phone, then you've just got your head in the sand. For kids these days it's how they communicate with each other. Snapchat, Whatsapp, IG, whatever new shite they're using now that I don't know about.
If you don't let your kid have one until they're 16 you're really limiting their social options. Sure you can be the old school parent who wishes kids weren't on their phones as much (don't we all), but do you really think you not letting your kid have a phone is going to catch on and all parents will take their phones away or do you think your kid will just be left out?
This would be like not letting your kid use the computer until they were 16 cause they're not using it for excel. Who gives a frick? AIM and shite like that were how we communicated.
12-14 is the right age IMO. 16 is crazy late. I had a phone before then and I was born in the 80s.
