how about you throw your phone away cause your parents didn't have one when they were 30. BOOM Bang Bye Felicia

I remember many a times sitting around for hours waiting for my parents to pick me up because practice ended early or was canceled

Lol. How did anyone ever grow up to be a functional adult before the last 15-20 years?
I remember when I was a kid. Get home from school, call or get called by friends in the neighborhood to figure out where we'll meet up and what time. Without landlines, like a poster above said, nowadays you have kids texting parents to see if their son can come out and play.

No kids, but I'm 25 and got a cell phone when I was 12. My niece got one at 10 and that seems pretty normal these days

This. There's really no need for them to have a cell phone before that
I don't have kids but I'd think when they start going places on their own would be ideal. If you leave them at practice can they contact you in an emergency? Sleepovers at friends house?

My kids missed the cell age growing up - imo it should be when they are able to save money thru chores etc and pay for it themselves. I didn't have my first cell phone till mid 1990s and I turned out ok. My dad used to honk the truck horn when it was time to come home

My parents let me have a cellphone when I started driving own my own, so 16 years old. Summer birthday, so I was going into my Junior year of HS. My daughter will also be able to have a cellphone when she starts driving on her own, so when she turns 16.

My daughter had one at 8. There were not too many in her class that did at her ago, but a year later ... they almost all did.

No, but when the time comes, we can get one (if need be). That way she can still stay in contact with friends, etc. I will add, if we do put in a landline, it will be in a centralized location (like by the kitchen near the computer nook).

I really don't think it's that much different to just give them a cell phone instead of setting up the landline phone. You can put restrictions on it, and it can come in handy in more cases than the landline.
Not saying you did this, I just think there's a weird stigma based on the "back in my day..." thought process. I'm guessing some that say their kid can't have one til they're 16 also have a landline and allow their kid on the home computer, which is in effect, not really all that different.

No worries. Can't say I disagree on what you just said. End of the day, there are different options that parents can do, which is good.

And on this, there totally is that stigma...

I wouldn't allow my kid to have a smartphone until they could pay for it themselves.
Until then, flip phone with texting but no data.

Both of my kids got phones at age 9. Life is short, enjoy it while you can. I couldn't imagine having that cool of a device when I was a kid.

My son is 6 and is entering 1st grade. I am getting ready to leave the military within the year, and transitioning into civilian life for the first time in my 31 years of existence (father was active duty). Once he shows the ability to text, or even talk to text I will be getting him a cell phone because I want to know that he is ok. There are so many ways to data lock, and internet lock phones these days that I don't have to worry about him seeing something he isn't supposed to. The reality of being in the civilian world where he could be snatched up in an instant scares the shite out of me. I've almost always lived on the installations around the world, but even then when I was younger, these types of fears didn't really exist because people weren't fricked up in the head like they are now.

My daughter is 10 and will be going into 5th grade. She does not have a phone.
Middle school, we will consider it, but probably not until 7th or 8th grade or until we feel comfortable leaving her at home by herself.
Contrary to what today's world will have you believe, a phone is not necessary for a child at a young age. I would rather my child be out doing things than to be trapped in front of a 5" screen.
