So our daughter is almost 10 and she is doing gymnastics 12 hours a week now. My wife is throwing around the idea of getting her a cell phone incase of emergency's, but the gymnastics studio is fully manned with trainers and a phone so I don't really see the need yet.

What age was it when you gave your kid(s) a cell phone?

Yup, if you don't provide one for her then she'll find another way to get one. She'll start selling drugs or panhandling.

My son got my old iPhone when he turned 13 last August. Age would be different for each kid and their responsibility levels, obviously...but that was the right time for him. He's proven to be trustworthy with it, hasn't broken or lost it, and only once ran my data up and even then it was kind of my fault for not properly explaining what he could or could not do with it.

I haven't yet. I have a 9 year old and I think we're going to wait until 12. She begged like crazy last Christmas but I'm trying to hold out.

This. There's really no need for them to have a cell phone before that

If you get her one, get her a crappy one, no need for anyone under 18 to have a smart phone.

communication. majority of households don't even have landlines anymore. talking with friends, letting parents know where they are etc. but i guess if your kid just stays home, inside, and doesn't ever do anything without you nor talk to or make any friends they will be fine until they start driving if they haven't killed themselves yet.

My daughter will get a cellphone when she needs one, probably around 15. What need does a child have for a cell phone? She has a tablet for playing games. I will make sure she's always around adults we know. Those adults will have their own phones.

I would think when you are comfortable that they are responsible enough to have one. I would think once they hit 10-13 age range. Once they start going with friends for extended periods of time.
