Steve Irwin cuz I’d literally just booked a trip to the Gold Coast less than a week before that happened. It was unnerving for a lot of reasons, but I could very much feel the sensitive nature of my mortality. Like if this LEGEND/Expert just got killed doing the bare minimum (Relative to his normal adventures) in the wilds of Australia, WTF do I think would happen to me once I “test those waters.”
Heath Ledger disturbed me as well, cuz we all knew TDK was coming out and he was all over the media doing his rounds for that. That one was pretty unexpected and stuck with me. And Kidd Kraddic shocked the shite out of me as well. That one makes you fear for your own life, a relatively young/healthy guy just up and dies for no obvious reason.
And then Kobe was prob the one where I had the most shock/hardest time processing, considering he wasn’t like a close family member or friend. But it very much felt like I knew him or grew up with him.

Stevie Ray Vaughn. Saw him at Jazz Fest a couple of months before his helicopter crash. No telling what he would have been able to do musically had his life not been snuffed out at such a young age.

Robin Williams. Was in a dark place myself at the time

Robin Williams was the only one that made me genuinely upset.

Hit me pretty hard when Pete Maravich passed.

Man. This was before my time, but it was really a depressing to learn what happened after listening to Blizzard of Oz for the first time.
That CD stayed in my car from they day I got it through the rest of high school - I spent many 7AM drives thinking about what could have been if they’d just been satisfied with buzzing the tour bus twice

I was 6 or 7 when Elvis died. My momma was a huge Elvis fan. I remember her crying while watching his funeral. I think why it hit me so hard was because I’d never seen her cry before.

Never thought of him as a celebrity, but I guess he was.
Watching him and Jeff Corwin as a kid is part of what inspired me to become a biologist. Steve's death was definitely a shock when I was in high school.

Reggie White stuck with me. Dude was a god on the football field and then drops dead just days after his 43rd birthday.
