No one is suggesting zero actions taken. We never “let it rip” for any novel virus.

I’m pushing 40 and with SARS I saw no scare, it was business as usual. Same with H1N1.

Had we done what was done then, it would have been uglier. There’s a reason Donnie turned coat on his downplaying of threat. You think that a-hole wanted to do this? Even that jackass knew there was no other option with what was known/unknown.

Even if we assume that this was ever the concern, what is the concern RIGHT NOW?

Oh, for sure, right now its not an issue. I'm just trying to point out that the fatality rate was almost never the issue so its revisionist history to take it and then talk about how much of an overreaction the response was. The original post I replied to was acting as if the fatality rate is why everything was shut down.

Everyone (myself included) was on board for the initial shutdown because the “flatten the curve” made logical sense.
Don’t include me in that. Even early on, there was enough data to know that shutting it all down was a mistake.

Yeah that’s nothing new.

Usually when someone has a fever or a cough they stay home from school or work.

Do you think you just discovered a cure for COVID-19v

H1N1 caused an extra 300k hospitalizations and no one gave a shite even though hospitals got stressed and patients had to be moved. You’re right. But it did kill almost 2k Americans under 18 and spared the old. Imagine if covid had that same number. We would still be shut down because “think of the children!!!1!” See the difference?

While I agree with this, it's easy for us to say that now in hindsight. No one knew it would turn out like this. Imagine if it ended up being the actual next plague and we didn't do anything.

I agree that we didn't have much information in the beginning, but we do now. The fact is that if you aren't 70+ and in reasonably decent health your survival changes are extremely high.

We should be 100% open.

Except we’ve had novel viruses before and this was never the reaction. And there will be more. This was a new precedent set for no fricking reason other than fear and hysteria pushed by media.

If a Democrat is president while the economy is rolling, we won't have this response. Guaranteed.

Id argue that people don’t always do this. Often kids aren’t sent to school with mild fevers. People go to work with a cough. My point was with awareness people would have been more strict on that behavior which would have been sufficient.

Meh, Our economy has definitely taken a huge hit. Don't get me wrong. But this thing has still killed 100k people here and counting. I don't know how you can look at that # and brush it aside as no big deal

Oh for sure, gotcha. Yea, I just really didn't want my comment to get politicized because of how off the rails this board gets. I was just referring to the original shutdown having to do with concerns of hospitals being overrun/lack of supplies rather than fatality rate. Didn't want to get into a commentary on the current situation so much. But I see how there are kinda two ways to go with the conversation from the post i responded to. I chose to discuss the past where as you were bringing up the present

By “people”, you mean the Democratic Party and states with Democratic leadership? Correct?

Please, please, please stop parroting this bullshite. Trump Recommends Shutdown.

This was a collective effort from top to bottom. It was initiated by the POTUS and embraced by almost every bullshite politician and gov't worker down to the county health officer. Only a few stood up and resisted and they were chastised publicly by Trump for doing so (the Georgia governor immediately comes to mind). Now, have the Deomcrats held on to this more so than the Republicans? Absolutely, but it all started at the top.

The case fatality rate was certainly part of the original lockdown equation. It was what...4-6% based on China's released numbers and over 10% in Italy?

That definitely pushed the, perhaps rightly, initial scare tactics to shut everything down.
