re: CDC and WhiteHouse clarify mask rules on the morning news shows

news reports focused on one anomalous result — his single test of the neck gaiter, which produced slightly more, and smaller, respiratory droplets than he’d measured in the baseline, no-mask condition. Fischer and his colleagues, none of them aerosol scientists, speculated that perhaps this particular fabric somehow functioned to splice large respiratory droplets into smaller ones. If true, this would, indeed, make a gaiter worse than no mask at all.
But, based on aerosol science, this is unlikely. Multiple tests of face coverings have shown that any face covering will block at least a small percentage of droplets generated when we speak or cough. While researchers have ranked the effectiveness of various cloth face coverings, no previous study has ever identified any face covering that is less effective than no face covering at all. Fischer’s results on this single test of a single neck gaiter may be due to any number of variables for which this proof-of-concept study did not control: Was he talking louder? Did the material of the neck gaiter retain moisture? Did he have more mucus on his vocal cords at that moment?
Even Fischer expressed dismay at the media’s coverage of his work. “Our intent was not to say this mask doesn’t work, or never use neck gaiters,” he told the New York Times. “This was not the main part of the paper.”

For at least 80 million people, yes.

Alright! Permission granted to avoid tickets from traffic cameras!

I also see people driving with their masks on. They're usually older people
The only possible benefit of the doubt I can give is that maybe they don't notice? I went to lunch with my grandmother last weekend and took my mask off as soon as I sat down. She was talking for several minutes before she realized hers was still on and took it off.
Maybe elderly folks' reaction time to realize it is still on is just slower?
Same for people who wear them all day long. I don't have to wear them anywhere besides entering a store or restaurant, so I notice it being on easily. If I worked all day in one, I may not.
That's all I got

And this is Biden's big almighty plan to stop Covid once and for all?
The Liberals are such fricking frauds. The only thing worse though is we're allowing this garbage to happen.

Neither the CDC nor the WH have any authority to make you wear a mask anywhere.

Implicit in the govt saying when it's ok not to wear a mask is the message that you must wear masks at other times.

So no neck gaiters?
They are factually worse for you then wearing nothing
How is it worse?
Makes the droplets smaller and makes the dispersal pattern wider. Plus it makes you touch your face more often and can give you a false sense of security.

You mean like every other face covering outside of a properly fitted and worn N95 or better mask?

Wrong
Neck gaiters UPDATED JANUARY 29, 2021
quote:
Neck gaiters, such as those from Buff, gained sudden notoriety in early August 2020 when headlines declared that wearing them was worse than wearing no mask at all. Lost in the conversation, however, was the fact that gaiters come in different materials and can be worn in different ways, which results in different degrees of protection against the release of droplets depending on how the results are measured. A Duke University study, which unintentionally sparked the ruckus, looked at one layer of a particular polyester-spandex design using a novel contraption (the actual topic of the paper). When the researchers analyzed the spray emerging from the gaiter wearer’s mouth, the threads, as the team hypothesized, seemed to have broken up the larger droplets into smaller ones, potentially making them more easily inhaled by people around the wearer. However, other researchers, using more-conventional experimental approaches, have found that gaiters—especially when worn doubled over (as explained in this non-peer-reviewed preprint PDF) or, even better, with the addition of a paper towel (as described in a non-peer proof-of-concept study)—can be quite protective. As with regular cloth face masks, the key is to create multiple layers and a good seal.
One disadvantage of wearing a gaiter is that removing it can be tricky. To do so without potentially contaminating yourself, slip your hands inside at the bottom edge so that you can use the back of your hands to stretch the fabric in opposite directions and lift the garment over and off your head. Wash your hands afterward.

I can assure you with 100% certainty that I touch my face less wearing a gaiter than I do wearing a cheap, poorly fit surgical mask. I don't buy it.

I have literally given no thought to Biden's mask mandate until this moment and I feel it's ludicrous if anyone adheres to that bullshite.

I kind of doubt wearing a gaiter instead of a mask really makes people touch their face more. I would wager people touch their faces about the same in either one, and they touch their faces a shite load more than if not wearing anything at all

I try to explain to this to people and they still don't understand. We are legit frickED

Why is this needed this point? When I’m out and about (and I’ve traveled a good bit) I see 99% of people wearing mask.

Glad to know Covid won’t get me if I’ll eating or drinking.
