Friend,
Reported ad nas here. This is not a new finding. The CDC has been reporting this data for months. From the beginning the CDC and other health agencies have told us that those who are most likely to have severe disease from coronavirus are the obese (43% of American adults are obese), have heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, severe COPD, or live in an immune compromised state.
The conclusion that is seeping out the conspiracy theorist's mind is that 94% of the deaths attributed to covid are not caused by covid, which is foolish. The "doctors" of Qhiropractic "medicine" and small town news reporters that are tweeting this headline do not seem to know how to interpret this data.
There are two things at play here: first, pre-existing conditions, like diabetes or obesity, and second, complications caused by coronavirus 2019.
For pre-existing conditions, yes, these are the people who have a much greater chance of having severe disease. If you have a gut or have even treated diabetes, you are far more likely to get a severe disease from this virus, just as you are with influenza, although, because covid-19 transmits much faster and more broadly, it will hospitalize many more than the average influenza. These underlying conditions often, and if the doctor did his or her job, should show up in a covid-19 patient's medical record. When reviewing those who are said to have died from covid-19, you will often find these pre-existing illnesses that were not caused by the disease.
You will also find in these same medical records other diagnoses -- the complications of the coronavirus 2019 that often killed the person: acute respiratory distress syndrome, hypoxic failure, respiratory failure, cardiac failure, pulmonary embolism, pneumonia, etc.
Because a person has multiple diagnoses in their chart does not mean that the person died of, say, diabetes mellitus 2. However, when you see a diagnosis such as ARDS or respiratory failure and they had covid-19 and no other diagnosis of infection or recent trauma, it is almost assuredly a death caused by covid-19.
It is sad that we have become so distrusting of our institutions, on both sides of the political aisle, that we jump to the worst possible conclusion when given only partial data. Rioters see the headline, "Person shot by police." They return to riot. Right wing internetters see a headline they think diminishes the severity of covid-19 and they say, "The pandemic is a hoax." Different starting point, and hopefully different end point, but similar irrational discernment.

And yet they still died of Covid, not the underlying conditions.

"Underlying conditions" like pneumonia (68k of 161k) and respiratory failure (55k of 161k). Yeah no shite.

I’m not sure why people think this is groundbreaking news.

Man, what a good paragraph

Pretty sure this has been known from the beginning. In AL, the ADPH website has always shown that only 5-6% of the deaths had no co-morbidities. Last time I looked, over 55% of the deaths had "multiple" co-morbidities.

It’s almost as if this has been for political purposes from the start...
