Imagine taking 20%+ from rape and molestation victims.
They would say 80% of something trumps 100% of nothing, which is what you would have without them.

60 million is not shite to the Catholic Church. Won’t even register….

I don’t know about y’all’s Catholic Church, but mine allows me to dictate what my charitable donations go to. We are given an envelope and can choose which initiative the contribution goes to. I contribute mostly to the needy and less fortunate in our area directly as opposed to the general coffers. I’m sure my church is not unique in this.

frick that. Vatican's worth billions if not trillions. They can pay the settlement.

The vatican should just sell a couple of stolen artifacts to cover it. There has to be billions in Greek and Roman and egyptian art in the Vatican. Nothing to do with Christianity.

This whole thing is fricked up. Thinking that the church is just like some corporation and that the parishioners are like stockholders is just ridiculous.
I truly feel terrible for the people who were molested. I know two grown men who are in the class-action. Good dudes.
But WHY DO I have to dig into my pocket to pay them and their lawyers? Both of them are way more well-off than me. And my own history of being molested by a neighbor doesn’t make me feel any better about it.
Money is not going to mend the pain those guys feel. And taking it from fellow parishioners and damaging the charitable mission of the church feels downright evil.

I appreciate your willingness to be charitable, but until you witness your dollars being handed over to the “charity of your choice”, I really don’t see how anyone can guarantee that their donation goes where intended. And before responses of “well, they are the Catholic Church, we should believe them”, they put themselves in this predicament by being less than honest.

Grok says:
A 2007 report from church insurers noted about 260 annual abuse reports in Protestant churches compared to 228 in Catholic ones, despite Protestant churches having more members (60 million vs. 51 million in the U.S.)

No one should be asked to contribute to a bankruptcy settlement with out a very detailed plan that lines out why it happened and how it won’t happen again.
I doubt that happens but I also don’t doubt they will be bailed out by blind followers.

Why should Catholic charities have to pay anything?!
This is the kind of thing that’s going to run people off.
It’s disgusting to suggest that innocent people have to fund the horrific actions of priests.

Uh, that’s gonna be a no from me Bud. The popes, priest and church hierarchy created this problem. Let them sell some of the art treasures at the Vatican to pay for this.
This is not the Catholic rank and file parishioners problem.

Or Tapestries. There are dozens if not more of these huge Tapestries lining the walls on the way to the Sistine Chapel. Supposedly they costs 2-3x to make at the time what it cost to have the Sistine Chapel painted by Michelangelo et al. Goodness knows their value today. My understanding is that these were commissioned works or gifts simply to cover walls to look more opulent.
