If safety is a major factor, I suggest a body on frame truck or SUV....20yrs in Trauma, physics, like poon, is undefeated.

No most MEN will spend busting a few knuckles with his son fixing things on his car. This teaches him problem solving skills that aren’t taught anymore.

I don’t get the need to “buy my 16 year old a car as soon as they get their license”. Let them borrow one of your older cars when they need it, maybe buy yourself a new one.
My dad was an insurance adjuster and took me to see the results of accidents when I was starting to drive. Too many kids making too many dumbass decisions. Learning to drive is (was) a big milestone and half the parents out there first pump and jump at the chance to have another person able to drive around and do chores. My kids won't drive until they have hundreds of hours behind the wheel with me there. Obviously that doesn't create a forcefield, but much like conceal carrying, not having experience will get you and others killed.

My 16 year old granddaughter drives mine, its a 2023. I like it, a lot. The later models are larger and have more features.

Trucks and SUV's may be "safer" in a multiple vehicle collision but are much more susceptible to single vehicle accidents due to the higher center of gravity and size of the vehicle.
This especially rings true with inexperienced drivers.

Running into this now. He’s dead set on wanting a truck but they’re so expensive even if used. Not wanting to get a money pit that keeps needing repairs

The newer Toyota RAV4 have a sportier body style. So you get a good look and still maintain the reliability and safety features for teenage drivers.

This opposite logic?

Bought mine an F150 with 150k miles, a Haynes repair manual, and a set of wrenches and sockets. He's already learned to replace the wiper motor, radio, door latches, and front body panels. Life skills and shite, you know?

I bought mine a black Hyundai Elantra and had the windows blacked out.
It looks pretty cool and drives great
I owned a Honda Accord once, they are very durable if you keep the oil changed

Why would it be opposite logic? If he gets into an accident, I don't want him 3.50 inches off the ground running up under the back of every other car on the road.
Makes sense to me

Im just speaking in terms of occupant mortality./ severe injury. No doubt at 6500lb vehicle trying to stop versus a 3000lb vehicle trying to stop will have different outcomes. With a large vehicle having larger mass it's typically the winner of the battle provided it's not vs a cement truck. Side impact T-bone intrusion, rear collision all tip in favor of a body and frame vehicle. Also the larger the vehicle the more airbags.
The IIHS crash tests only tells a small portion of the story. Remember those tests that help sell automobiles are conducted at only 40mph. They also do so not test for rear collision where passengers are very vulnerable.

Obviously some years ago. But a 2008 Civiic and 2007 Corolla got my children through HS and college. Used by a few years, but each low mileage. No issues with either.

This is what I bought my son.
Be purposeful, always pay attention.
He’s a HS Sr. and tomorrow morning he’s driving 5.5 hours, by himself, up to Oxford to go to the football game. Just have to trust that they care enough to pay attention.
You can sit in the driver’s seat of that car and put your palm flat on the ground without leaning over. Safe = control…

hard to argue against a Toyota or Honda but my daughter's first car will be an early 90's edition Volvo 240: they're built like tanks, reasonable reliability, and not too fast

We shopped for about 4 months before we finally found what we were looking for. We searched and met so many scam artists on FB Marketplace. I think the ratio we had was 2 solid sellers to every 10 we saw. We ended up finding her a 2013 Accord EXL, with 93k miles, on the side of the road near our house. They were asking $8k and we ended up settling for $6k. Good luck, that was an experience I don't look forward to doing again with our son.

Copy that. Got Civics for both kids ('14 & '15), the most recent one purchased in 2018. The '14 had 14K miles, the '15 had 24K Other than a recent A/C issue on '15, both have been issue-free.
