Have never paid cash for a vehicle but I’m considering it, any tips on getting the best deal? Any benefits to looking out of state? Live in Louisiana fwiw.

Buying with cash most likely won't be that big of a discount.

For starters…don’t tell them you’re paying cash.

When you say “cash” to you mean cash or do you mean you are not going to need financing?

There’s a substantive difference between the two concepts.

Wrote a check for my last vehicle purchase, flew to St Louis to pick it up. I did not get a deal, MSRP +$2250…so no help there.

Don’t understand the appeal given the time value of a dollar with smart investments.

GM giving 3.9% I think, on 5 year loans.

If you aren't beating that in market, there's an issue.

Unless serious discount, I don't see the point.

I've heard this as well. If they know your paying with cash you won't get the best deal. Go through the whole thing with them and say your interested in seeing what they can do to finance it. Agree on price, see what they can do fir a monthly note then say.....you know, I think I'll just pay cash for it.

You may end up paying more since you are not financing. They run rebates for financing through dealer sometimes.

You will get money back 500-1000 for financing.

Finance it and pay it off in 6 months. That the usual early payoff period. That how I do it.

I’ve bought all my vehicles with cash. Be nice.

The best luck I’ve had is saying, I wanted to pay with cash so I can’t budge much and say all you have a few grand less than what they are asking, but really like the truck. Be nice. Just make up something genuine like you’ll just need to save another few months and come back when you have enough.

Say you really don’t want to take out a loan due to another purchase you are making, like a house or something. Be nice.

They’ll always call back, and try to see where you’re at. May even drop the price somewhat. Be nice, and always stick to your guns, but in an innocent, nice, aw shucks way. Be patient. They’ll eventually call and give it to you for the price you originally asked.

Be nice, until it’s time to not be nice. Go pick up your new ride.

Do NOT tell them you are paying with cash until after you have agreed on a final price in writing. They are going to ask you how you are going to pay early on the negotiation to try to feel you out but just tell them you will LOOK at financing options when we get to that point. Lie to them & move on with the negotiation.

In my last negotiation after I told them at the end I was paying cash, I had the salesman go to his manager & come back out to me to actually say "I have spoken with my manager & we both agree we would rather you finance the vehicle instead". I laughed at him & said I am ready to go pay now. You can't make this stuff up.

I typically negotiate the best deal and put a shite load down then pay it off a couple months later. That way you can take advantage of any extra discounts the dealer may offer.

Have an out the door number - tax, tag and title included.

Be willing to walk away.

Later in the month is easier to get a deal, especially if the salesperson has had a slack month. Hard to find out who that is, but over-eagerness usually is a tell.

Bought a 2008 Toyota Corolla with 116,000 miles last week in cash for $5800. My car got totaled a few weeks ago and insurance only gave me $5300. Everything I saw from Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Lafayette area was too expensive or the right price with over 230,000 miles.

My dad’s side of the family lives in Brandon, MS so I looked on the marketplace on Facebook for the Brandon area and I found that car for $6500. I test drove it and it drove really good and the inside was really clean. I asked if there was any negotiation room and the seller was willing to go down to $5800.

I was usually looking for someone who posted pictures of the car at their house instead of a used car lot. I rather deal with a private seller instead of someone who just buying a few cars and trying to flip them.
