When people say they paid invoice, does that mean they got the purchase price down to invoice plus TTL? Or is the idea to get your out the door or "drive off" price down to invoice?

i told my salesman what i was going to pay each month and he made it happen. that's how you negotiate.

TTL should be excluded from discussions of car pricing because they're different in every city/State.

First of all, if you think the 'invoice' your friends sees is the actual invoice, they've already failed. There may be 2 people at a franchise dealership that actually know what new cars cost them. Don't even get me started on used cars

Pay what you can afford and move along. You aren't getting a good deal regardless of what you think.

So you're saying if you paid 30k on a car with an invoice of 31k, you paid below invoice, even though you'll be over 31k after TTL?

I'm not looking for car buying or car price negotiating tips. I'm simply asking how people define a common term. Thanks for the deeply useful tip of "pay what you can afford" though.

yes, generally

The idea is to get the price as low as possible without wasting your time. I'm not going to spend 4 hours at the dealership to knock off another 500 bucks.

Dealers get incentives that drive it down lower than invoice. It's also the theory behind end of month negotiations. There is a target number of vehicles to get a much larger bonus for the dealership.

With the bazillion OT experts on this subject, The next time I'm going buy a Honda Accord, I'm posting the specs in a thread and one of you EXPERTS better tell me what to pay for it.

I'll tell the salesman the "OT SAYS SO!"

This. They literally have 15 minutes of my time. No second chances, etc.

I am .

Did it last Friday. I don't really have to go into work on Fridays and had already made visits to the major dealerships in Houston. I showed up at 8:30 knowing the game was waiting them out and being willing to leave. 3 times I got out of my chair, 3 times the charge that "couldn't be changed" right before got taken off. Some as low as $200. I apologize to them after I'm done. I know it's annoying. But I have that whole "fear of a better offer" thing where I've got to get the best deal. At least in Houston I know I can go down the road and get the same vehicle, so with a little time and patience, the money falls off. My wife now refuses to come to the dealerships with me

Had a second dealership texting and asked my final sale price. I told them and they flat out told me "that's impossible". I smiled a little.

To the OP, I don't included taxes. You pay that anywhere. But I do at least take fees into consideration. You can get a good deal on sales price and pay an extra 500 in fees that differ from dealer to dealer.

People overcomplicate car buying. Pay what you're comfortable paying.

I will say that I've learned that you can't really go into it thinking "it's worth this much, so I'm paying that and nothing more". Or "once I get this price, I'm happy and willing to sign". The price is going to vary depending on where you are buying, time of year, time of month, inventory, etc.. But if you shop around a good bit at that particular time in that area, you should find what the going price is and be able to squeeze out a few hundred more. You go in thinking of a certain price from the start and you might get laughed out the door or leave a lot of money on the table.

Invoice is too high.

You take invoice and drop 2-4% to account for holdback and marketing.

That's where you start, then add in incentives if offered.

Drive off price is that negotiated price plus TTL.

Never pay dealer fees.
