I'm probably around 50/50 on my AM/FM radio listening over 50 years. A lot of the AM was after discovering Rush back when I was commuting to college. Also, a lot of WWL (Late Night / Road Gang) while driving trucks across the Southeast.

That said, the audio quality of AM radio is shite. Other than maybe as a backup emergency broadcast system, I cannot think of any practical reason AM even still exists.

People who drive EVs probably don't listen to talk.

Don't most of those have online streaming available anyway?

Yea, the link mentions TuneIn app that does it, and my car has the TuneIn app...not that I've ever used it to listen to AM, but today I learned I do have AM capabilities in my EV.

Awful lot of people forgetting how crucial radio is during those real arse kickers of storms. I was in Brandon MS during Katrina and AM radio from New Orleans was able to break through up there on a good day.

Old timer utility linesmen use AM to find faults in the grid when SHTF.

I don't listen to AM regularly, but with that long arse range I sure as shite have a station pre-programmed for getting out of dodge during hurricane season. But I guess your fancy EV will have all the info you need when Trina 2 kicks up

Solution: connect phone to the wifi on your vehicle and pull up an AM radio app. So many extra steps but you know, nothing can be simple nowadays

AM isn't magical, it needs antennas that can be knocked out just like FM. How far do yall think you have to travel to get away from a hurricane?

Is this as big an issue as you make it out to be?

I don’t think I assigned a number to the level of the issue seriousness.

It’s just funny that with all this awesome technology for EVs they can’t figure this out without apparently a bunch of research and money.

Yep I bet they don’t even have cassette players or ash trays either.

Astute observation. AM antennas are still the cheapest and fastest to get back up and running.

FM drops out between greater NO and Baton Rouge. If I'm getting out, I'm getting further than an hour.

Drive this a couple times a week and never noticed an area I couldn't get FM.

Anyway, as noted earlier in the thread, the AM phaseout seems to be on euro models since AM has mostly been phased out over there. And American EVs have AM with no issues.

In a time of crisis, AM radio is almost as valuable as shortwave.
